About The Experience

Situated between Apt and Saignon in the South of France, and surrounded by the numerous delightful villages of the Luberon, this Provence vacation villa is a charming eighteenth century home set within 25 acres of beautiful gardens, woodlands and cherry tree orchards. Here you can explore the countryside or enjoy the comfort of your own rental villa in Provence, complete with terraces and a private swimming pool.

Location Description

There are plenty of places for hiking or walking in the wooded hills and fields all around this French villa in Provence. The delightful French villages of Roussillon, Bonnieux, Menerbes, Gordes and many more are nearby. Apt, the closest town at only 1 km, is a great market town. Though it is not a small village, there is an old town within Apt, centered about an 11th century Cathedral. Along the narrow paved streets in this area you will find vaulted passages and some lovely fountains. Saignon, alternately, is a quaint hilltop village, great for exploring on foot. Here you can climb to the top of the huge rock behind the village and enjoy fantastic panoramic views of the plains and the Luberon mountain range. You can also find horse-riding and mountain biking. Summer festivals are held in Avignon, Orange, Aix-en Provence, and many nearby cities.

Nearby Attractions: Bikes can usually be rented at the local bike shop, tennis courts nearby, small villages, golf.

The property is completely private and features carefully maintained multi-level gardens with chestnut, plane, and cypress trees. It also enjoys 360 degree views to the Monts du Vaucluse, the Plateau d'Albion, Saignon and the Plateau des Claparedes. From the kitchen there is an attractive outside area (south-facing) for relaxing under the trees and a delightful place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with barbeque. Close to the terrace on the west side of the villa is the swimming pool (12m x 4m) with a spacious sitting area with a natural wood and stone patio. There is also a set of balls to play Petanque (the "French bocce ball").

Interior Description
(350 m2/350 ft2)

Inside this large holiday home in France, two of three floors have been completely renovated and tastefully furnished (the third floor is not open for rent). Because there is a bunk-bed in one room, this villa can comfortably accommodate 8 adults or 6 adults and 4 children.

Ground Floor: To your right is a doorway that leads into a living room, bright and high-ceilinged with a sofa, two armchairs, and a fireplace. Continuing into the next room (counter clockwise around the house) will bring you to a nice dining/drawing room with seating for six. Next is a little hallway area with a half-bath containing a sink and a toilet. Past the hallway (and also accessible from the entryway) is a well equipped kitchen, open to the dining area which seats eight. Making a right on the other side of the dining area, you will go down a few steps into a cellar, connected to a utility room with a washer, dryer, fridge, and freezer, and finally a wine room. Going left off of the dining room leads you full circle around the house, going through a small library and then into the second living room, which has a fireplace and a TV. The second living room, the library, and the kitchen all open out onto the main terrace, where there is a large outdoor dining table. The office/dining room doors open out to a stairway leading up to the swimming pool on the second level.

First Floor: Up the flight of stairs, you will find a circular hall with bedrooms branching off. The first bedroom is furnished with two twin-beds and a bunk bed (best suited for children). The second bedroom has two twin-beds (90 cm) joined together to form a king-sized bed, a decorative fireplace, and a small TV. These two bedrooms share a bathroom with sink, tub with handheld shower head, and a separate WC. The third bedroom has a queen-sized (160 cm) bed, access to the west terrace, and an en suite bathroom with a shower, sink, and separate WC. The fourth bedroom also has a queen-sized bed (160 cm) and terrace access (up three stairs). It also has an en suite bathroom with sink and tub with handheld shower head. The WC is separate and just outside of the bedroom door.

Customer Reviews

Enjoyed Most:
The villa was beautiful and the swimming pool was outstanding. The restoration was fantastic and very authentic in the public rooms, and modern and well done in the kitchen and bathrooms.
Enjoyed Least:
While we took all of our meals in the outdoor courtyard, and they were fantastic, the outdoor tables and chairs were not of the same quality as the rest of the house. More substantial tables and chairs would be a huge improvement and would almost seem like a requirement given the overall high level of the villa. Editor's Notes: The tables and chairs have been replaced. March 2010.
Surrounding Area:
Apt is just OK other than the Saturday market, but the countryside and the other small villages are really great.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Apt was the nearest town. We never walked in. It was good for shopping and getting a late afternoon ice cream, but it was not really "charming". We preferred the smaller villages such as Bonnieux, Rossillon and Saignon.
Tips or Restaurants:
We retained the services of the Marquandt sisters who prepared our meals and did laundry and cleaning. Their meals were incredible and made it difficult for us to venture out. In Bonnieux the La Bastide de Capelongue 2 stars was truly outstanding.

Enjoyed Most:
Instead of having a fortieth wedding anniversary and seeing a lot of people for a very short time. we decided to bring together the people we are closest to, our two daughters, a son-in-law, a soon-to-be-son-in-law, and a baby grandson, in a great house in the part of the world we love best, Provence. This property made our week very special. The grounds are superb, there are lots of rooms to disappear into, two rooms to dine in beside the outdoor dining area. The owners welcomed us with enough food - tomatoes, shallots, pasta, sauces, cherries, and so on to make a meal if we needed one, and they left the place very well furnished and very well stocked. We liked the owners very much, and if we can find our way to go back, we will!
Enjoyed Least:
One of the showers is better than the other two, so we all showered in that one. There wasn't a big carving knife, so cutting a guinea hen in two to barbecue it which we did twice took some muscle. Otherwise, all our comments are not just positive, but a rave.
Surrounding Area:
The Luberon is just great. The hill villages are spectacular.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Apt is within walking distance - just.
Tips or Restaurants:
La Petite Maison in Cuceron was the best meal we had. Mernard Mathys in Apt was very good. Le Moulin in Lourmarin was good, but not two-star quality.

Enjoyed Most:
A really authentic experience. Wonderful owners who speak English. Very helpful. The house has been newly redone - very clean and sleek. The outside was still being worked on. I think we were one of the first renters. This is a great property for couples or families with older children. Kitchen is great. Everything was new and clean, and we really liked the maid service 3 times a week.
Surrounding Area:
Really liked the nearby small town, which is not a tourist town. It had an authentic feeling, which we liked. The area was great for day trips.
