- Exterior Description
-
This palazzo was constructed during the first half of the 14th century, at a time when Florence had begun to expand beyond the boundaries of the ancient Roman nucleus. It was commissioned by Messer Lapo, a member of the Aldobrandinis - a wealthy family who made their fortune in the spice business. At that time, via delle Belledonne was a main commercial artery leading out of the city - it connected the Mercato Vecchio (market square) and via Strozzi to the Porta del Trebbio, the city door that opens a path to the north. In the 19th century, the palazzo housed several painters' workshops, including that of the celebrated artist Ingres. The artists' need for light is probably the reason why most of the apartments have very large windows.

Customer Reviews
Overall:
Generally a nice apartment.
Enjoyed Most:
Location.
Enjoyed Least:
Could have used more than two pillows. Mosquitoes were bad even with windows closed and A/C on. Shower head wasn't great.
Surrounding Area:
Convenient to everything, quiet, lovely to interact with neighborhood vendors.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bring washcloths and fly swatter and/or spray. Restaurant-Osteria del Porcellino was small and delicious.

Overall:
We felt it was much better than expected. Very quiet, in super location, with all needed shops right around the corner, it was an instant love affair!
Surrounding Area:
Even with intermittent rain (we don't know what that is in San Diego) we found that we participated with life in Florence the moment we stepped out of the door. Everything is in walking distance. We even walked from the train station the short distance to the apartment when we arrived, and again on the way out. We had no problem with wheels on the luggage.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Need you ask? If it's religious art you're looking for, Florence is your place. Although
"DAVID" and company aren't bad either!
Tips or Restaurants:
Follow your own nose. There are many small places which offer good food. Be alert to the prices in "moderate" places, they can shock you. And be alert: meat dishes NEVER come with even a hint of any potatoes or veggies. Order them separately if you care to eat a healthy diet.
