- The fact that this glamorous castle in the Loire Valley is the main monument of the town it's located in, Challain la Potherie, says a lot about its historical significance and cultural importance. This vacation rental near Angers was not only designed by the same architect who helped design the Louvre, but it was built as a private residence in 1854 for the Count Rochefoucauld, and is made up of elegant, yet comfortable luxurious bedroom suites. - Location Description
The chateau makes up one corner of Challain la Potherie in the Loire Valley, and is the main monument of the small village. There are shops, markets, and a cathedral within walking distance. Although there are other interesting towns nearby, such as Segre and Chateaubriant, the city of Angers is where you'll want to spend some time. Angers is about 45 kilometers away and is definitely worth a day trip or two to take in the interesting monuments and fun festivals. The music festival, the Tour de Scenes, is held annually in May where there are free concerts in the streets. Each January, the Premiers Plans Festival d'Angers is held, a film festival showcasing different genres of European films. Along with film festival, the committee hosts various workshops and lectures throughout the year hosts festivals, workshops, and lectures. Angers is also full of restaurants, shops, markets, museums, and ancient churches and castles (including the Chateau d'Angers). There is also a small airport and a train station where it's possible to take the TGV to Paris in about an hour and a half.

- Exterior Description
- This historic castle was designed by the renowned Louis Visconti, who was an official architect for the Louvre and designer of the tomb of Napoloen at Les Invalids. The chateau was then built by Rene Honde in 1854 as a private residence for Count Rochefoucauld and his family. It is set in large landscaped garden, has a tranquil park with walking paths, as well as a lake offering beautiful scenery. The chateau makes up one corner of the small village of Challain La Potherie.
- Interior Description
- Ground Floor: The chateau has 150-feet limestone walls, 365 windows, 52 fireplaces, and 12 turrets. The ceilings are hand-painted and the wood paneling and cabinetry is hand-carved. There are several formal sitting rooms throughout the chateau. The kitchen is equipped with a cook-top, oven, freezer, teakettle, coffee maker, and fireplace, as well as a long dining table with chairs. There is one suite on this floor made up of two bedrooms. The first bedroom has a 160 cm queen-sized bed. The second bedroom, connected by a dressing room, has two 90 cm single beds. The suite has an ensuite bathroom with a sink, toilet, shower, and tub.
First Floor: There are seven bedrooms on this floor. The first suite has a 180 king-sized, fireplace, silk curtains, and an ensuite bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower. The second suite has a queen-sized bed, a single bed in an adjoining room, and en ensuite bathroom with tub. The third suite has a king-sized bed, single bed in an adjoining room, and an ensuite bathroom with tub. The fifth and sixth bedrooms each have a king-sized bed and bathroom with shower. The seventh bedroom has a queen-size bed, a single bed in an adjoining room, and a bathroom down the hall. The eighth bedroom has a queen-sized bedroom, a baby crib, and a bathroom down the hall.
