- Location Description
-
This villa rental is located near the center of Sorrento, looking down over the city and some amazing ocean views. Going into the heart of Sorrento itself, you'll find yourself in a thriving seaside community, filled with life, good food, and great shopping. Sorrento is famous for two things you can't miss: Limoncello (an alcoholic aperitif) and inlaid wood. The workshops of Sorrento were the first to use the technique of arranging small pieces of wood into intricate patterns, a practice which has been refined and perfected through generations. Take the time to find and visit one of the workshops still in operation today-- you won't regret it! There are also a couple of places you ought not to miss. The first is the 10th century Basilica di San Antonio. Saint Anthony is the patron of navigators, and sailors have made thousands of votive offerings at his tomb in the crypt. The 11th century Cathedral is also beautiful, housing some frescoes and a bell tower with a ceramic clock. The cloisters of Saint Francis are interesting because they have been "restored" many times over the centuries, resulting in an impressive display of architectural styles from late gothic to the renaissance. The "Sorrento Summer of Music" is also held at the cloisters, every year from July to September, and features international musicians performing alongside of emerging musical talents.

- Exterior Description

The villa stands in one of the most panoramic areas of Sorrento, on the rise above Marina Grande, the old harbour which still has the typical old fisherman's houses and is the most typical and interesting place in the town. In the evening its many restaurants come to life with echoes of the famous neapolitan songs of the past. You can reach the centre of town on foot as it's only 400 meters away, though the road is narrow and is not suitable for large cars, so only small cars can park in front of the villa, whereas public parking is 350 meters away. The house is surrounded by a large garden (1,000 m2) with terraces on several levels, with paved areas furnished with tables, barbecue and a wood-burning oven, from where you can enjoy the marvellous panorama of the Gulf of Naples. You can swim in the sea at Marina Grande, which can be reached by public transport, or by taking the car to Marina di Puolo (about 2.5 kms). The center of Sorrento is very lively and offers shopping and very good quality restaurants and bars.

Customer Reviews
Overall:
We loved every minute of it. It was great for our multigenerational family of 9.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was outstanding. We had a lot of rooms to gather inside and many multiple terraces outside.
Surrounding Area:
It was very easy walk down hill to the town of Sorrento. The view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius was outstanding.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sorrento was an easy walk, down hill.
Directions:
We had a driver from Mondo, who spoke directly with the key holder. I would highly recommend Mondo; we needed a mini bus to transport the 9 of us. The driver switched to a smaller vehicle, on the main road, so that he could drive us and our luggage right up to the door of villa.

The views were magnificent.
Enjoyed Least:
The hill to get to the villa.

Going down to the small pier where the fisherman came in and eating fresh fish and pasta.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sorrento--yes, we walked everyday.

Good shoes to go up and down

Overall:
Superb. Everything we hoped it would be.
Enjoyed Most:
Huge house, peaceful, with beautiful views, gardens, and excellent facilities. Good, safe place to park car, though tricky navigating switchbacks of tiny road leading to house. Lots of bedrooms and bathrooms. Great help from Signora Giuseppina. Ideal for our family of several generations. The place where you hang the laundry is a beautiful, large covered porch with lovely views. I don't think I ever enjoyed doing laundry so much. We enjoyed eating meals most nights at home on the outside porch overlooking the sea.
Enjoyed Least:
It's not that we didn't like it, but there are low walls over steep drops, which required keeping a careful watch over an active 3-year old. The property is situated on a steep hillside and that is what made for the gorgeous views. Also Sorrento and surrounding towns are very crowded, even in late May.
Surrounding Area:
Plenty of options for things to see and do.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Sorrento isn't all that small but it is an easy, steep walk downhill -- about 10-15 min to the heart of Sorrento. We all got used to the steep walk back, and did it 1-2X per day. It is almost impossible to park in Sorrento, and traffic in the area is crowded, so a car is not useful for that.
Tips or Restaurants:
The private "Leonelli" beach at Marina Piccola is terrific. Rental of lounges and umbrellas is reasonable. Service and food is very good and friendly. We had a couple of great days there with the whole family. Can walk to it from the villa. The Circumvesuviana train is crowded and old, but convenient for getting to and from Pompeii. We rented a car and driver for the 7 of us for the day to tour Amalfi (using an excellent firm recommended by Giuseppina). Price was very cost-effective for a group and given the crowds, it would have been difficult and unpleasant to do otherwise. As it was, we had a wonderful day.
Directions:
We met Giuseppina who led us to the villa and helped pick up the rest of our party at the Circumvesuviana train station. The villa would be difficult to find without help.
Check In Out:
Our RentVillas contact in the U.S. (Barbara) was great for helping us choose a villa and for answering all our questions ahead of time. Thank you!
