About The Experience
This three-story villa is an old converted mill on the edge of a charming hamlet in the center of historic Normandy, with interior timbers featured throughout the building. Almost an acre of private gardens incorporate a fishable stream (permit required) and expansive terrace.
Location Description

Les Authieux-sur-Calonne’s location makes it an ideal base to explore the coast and countryside of Normandy. A hamlet of quaint timbered buildings is within easy walking distance. The nearby town of Pont l'Eveque, with its lake and convenient train station is only 7km away, which makes it handy for rail trips to Bayeux, Caen, Mont Saint-Michel, Rouen and Paris. The jet-set vacation destination of Deauville (often known as the Parisian Riviera) is the closest seaside resort, and further west is Ouistreham, the most easterly point of the beaches that hosted the D-Day landings. The picturesque fishing town of Honfleur is twenty minutes’ drive to the north.

Nearby Attractions: Golf course (10 km), D-Day tours in Bayeux, Bayeux Tapestry, cathedrals and museums in Bayeux, Rouen and Caen.

Overall:
Our experience is one we will never forget. Our family of ten arrived at Le Moulin de Calonne and we were greeted by the caretakers. That day a main water line broke in the area and the caretakers were upset as there was no water. They went over and above and set up two hotel rooms close by for our family to use the shower and bath facilities for two days until the water was fixed. They cooked us dinner for the inconvenience and breakfast every morning. They were wonderful and we all enjoyed the French cooking so much they cooked for us every night. We will certainly go back again.
Enjoyed Most:
The area of the property was so beautiful and peaceful. The grounds were better than any picture we saw of the property which was on an acre. A beautiful stream rushing through, so nice to spend our last week after a busy week in Paris, city life, completely different.
Surrounding Area:
We enjoyed the fact you could go to several surrounding areas by car very easily. We went to the D-Day beach, to the fishing village, and Mont Saint Michel.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Pont L'Eveque was the nearest small town. It was about five minutes away by car.
Tips or Restaurants:
Suggestions for future renters would be to have the caretakers cook for you--it was fabulous. The nearest restaurants were in Pont L'Eveque.
Directions:
You do need a GPS for this property as it will bring you right to it. We did get the coordinates from RentVillas.
Check In Out:
Very easy when we arrived and also upon departing.

Overall:
We had a very enjoyable stay here. The property was large and well appointed. It was centrally located for exploration of Normandy. The caretakers, Clairette and Jean Claude, were warm and very friendly.
Enjoyed Most:
We enjoyed the peaceful rural atmosphere, the spaciousness of the rooms and the grounds, and the ease in getting to a main road to go to specific destinations.
Enjoyed Least:
We had some confusion in the beginning about the kitchen situation as we had rented villas before and had done breakfasts and some dinners ourselves. The kitchen here is shared by the caretakers and they speak only French so it took us a couple of days to figure out what the situation was. Once we did, however we had them provide our breakfast and dinners and it was great, convenient, and very reasonably priced.
Surrounding Area:
This property is on or very close to the Cider Route so the surrounding area is just lovely. We visited Giverny on the way to the villa, explored the Cider Route, went to the Bayeux and the D Day beaches, to Caen, to Honfleur and to Mont St. Michel.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Pont L'Eveque is the nearest town. It isn't within walking distance but is less than 10 minutes by car and very charming. In the past we have been able walk to a village and have enjoyed that experience but this was great, too--can't get more convenient than just walking into the lovely dining room !
Tips or Restaurants:
I would suggest planning to have Clairette prepare your breakfast and as many dinners as you can. There is nothing within walking distance (the one small restaurant nearby was closed when we were there) and she does a lovely job both with the meals and the decor. She is flexible with the breakfast so you don't have to plan a specific time, but if you need to be off early it is no problem for her to have things ready at an early hour!
Directions:
We used a GPS and found it without trouble, but the sign confused us a little because it looked like a hotel sign to us.
Check In Out:
People should be aware that the caretakers speak only French-- they are very welcoming but when you phone, if you don't speak French, communication will be challenging.

Overall:
Loved it! Great peaceful location, wonderful ambience and light, lots of living space, and beautiful flora everywhere. Caretakers live on the property, non-english speaking, very welcoming, yet non-intrusive.
Enjoyed Most:
Great central location for sightseeing and day trips to many of the coastal Normandy towns, Mont Saint Michel, Caen, Bayeux, and Rouen. Property itself was peaceful and beautiful.
Enjoyed Least:
Can't think of anything I didn't like.
Surrounding Area:
Lots of great places to sightsee. we went to Rouen, Caen, Bayeux, the D-day beaches, American Cemetery, and Mont Saint Michel. All easy driving distance, but we were able to return to peace and quiet away from all the busy tourist areas.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Nearest town was Pont-L'Eveque. Had a grocery store, bakery, butcher, etc.
Tips or Restaurants:
There is an excellent restaurant that sits down the road from the house, easy walking distance, called Le Bistrot des Passants. we ate there twice it was so good! House is very well-stocked as far as kitchen pots and pan, linens, and most toiletry items. Additionally, they do also have Wireless Internet access and a BBQ grill.
Directions:
I used a GPS to find the property- took me right to the driveway.
Check In Out:
Easy, even if you don't speak French. Received our full deposit back.
