- About The Experience
- With miles of beaches within a 10 minute drive, and one of the most beautiful villages in France as “your” village, it will be hard to find a better place to call home for a week or two. The chateau is located in the village of Mornac-sur-Seudre, so you can walk to markets and restaurants. A short drive will take you to the beach of La Plage del la Grande Cote.
- Location Description
This large chateau is located just above the village of Mornac-sur-Seudre, a 12th Century village with charming streets filled with arts and craft workshops, a beautiful Romanesque church, and a 14th Century market place, where fish, fruit, meat and vegetable stalls are set up every Thursday and Sunday mornings. Although located right in the village, the large property is entered through iron gates from a small road by the village church, and a driveway then leads to the main building. You can walk to a grocery store, bakery and several restaurants from the chateau. From the village port area you can take a small road which follows the canal along which pleasure boats cruise and down. The nearest beach (Atlantic Coast) is just a 10 minutes drive away. La Plage de la Grande Cote is a family-supervised beach of several kilometers in length, and including a car park, restaurants and shopping.
Nearby Attractions: Thursday and Sunday morning market days in the village, beaches (La Plage del al Grande Cote is just 10 minutes away by car), La Palmyre (large zoo), Marennes (famous oyster port), Bordeaux wine area of Medoc. The 'Festivale des Nuits Romanes' in the summer celebrates local artists, architecture and heritage. 'Francofolies' in La Rochelle takes place in mid July.

- Exterior Description
- The chateau was originally built in 1717 on the place of a fortified castle which defended the village of Mornac. From the three main bedrooms of the house are wonderful views over the village roofs and the Seudre River. There are spacious grounds, an old paved terrace along one side of the house, with stone railing and views across the countryside. The main courtyard has a grassy area and a fenced swimming pool (12.5m x 6.5m) with a shallow end and steps. Access to the river is protected by fencing. Most of the time there are horses nearby.
- Interior Description
- Ground Floor: As you enter the house there is a massive stone staircase and protected access to a closed cellar. On your left a door opens onto the main living room. This room offers comfortable seating and an impressive collection of portraits all around the top of the walls. Then through the doorway, you access a billiard room (American billiard table) with a bridge table and some seating. From this room, you come to another hallway which leads to a suite with a single bedroom (90 cm) connected to a double bedroom (160 cm queen-size bed) with outside access to the riverside, an ensuite bathroom and a separate toilet room. The hall also leads to the dining room with a large table seating 14, a massive old decorative fireplace and access to the courtyard. Off the dining room are a laundry room with washing machine, a guest bathroom with a toilet, and the kitchen with American refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. The kitchen opens onto a terrace with table and chairs, ideal for outdoor meals. On the ground floor there is also a small sitting room with a TV and comfortable seating.
First Floor: There are two staircases to the first floor: one is from the main entrance hall; the other is from the dining room. From the dining room staircase is a twin-bedded room (two 90 cm beds), a bathroom with toilet and a half-bathtub with shower head, another bedroom with a queen-size bed (160 cm) and a single bed (90 cm) and an ensuite bathroom with shower and toilet. This bedroom also connects with the corridor off which are the 3 double bedrooms, each with a queen-size bed (160 cm). From the main staircase in the entry hall there are three double bedrooms with nice views. One bedroom has an ensuite bathroom with tub and a separate toilet room. The other two each has an ensuite shower room and a separate toilet room.
