Situated near the Church of Santa Maria Nuova in the center of Perugia, this abbey apartment is located just outside the old city walls. The main plaza of the city is a short walk uphill. From the first settlement of Umbrians, then Etrucscans, Romans, and throughout history, Perugia has been a place of major importance. Its high position over the Tiber valley puts it in a key military position, which is why it has been the site of many political and military struggles throughout history. Today it remains a spot of rich historical traditions and architecture spanning centuries. Just a few examples: ancient walls from the original Etruscan city; a 12th century fountain; the 14th century Palazzo dei Priori; and the 15th century Cathedral of San Lorenzo. The list goes on. Suffice to say you'll never run out of things to see here! Likewise, nearby Assisi is a place rich in a different kind of history, as it is the birthplace of both St. Francis and St. Clare. You can visit the 13th century basilica housing the body of St. Francis, filled with magnificent frescoes by Giotto. There are also other smaller churches, chapels, and religious buildings—including the body of St. Clare, still on view.

Overall: Loved the apartment in Perugia!
June, 2007
Show All 26 Reviews
Overall:
Our trip was planned with Perugina being our "icing" on the Italian cake. Sometimes when you book online, your concerns are that the "reality" of the booking match the pictures online. They not only matched them, they surpassed them. "Perugina", our abbey apartment, located in the Cloister of a Church built in the 13th Century, was perfect. Once we got over the reality that we were not filming on a movie set, we settled into our beautiful "home". Our Travel Advisor from RentVillas did a great job of keeping us informed of every moment of our trip, so the calls were made, the train arrived on time, the housekeeper met us with a big smile and the keys to our new Italian home away from home. All we had to do was go to the local market in the Piazza and buy the few things we needed. When you are comfortable in your surroundings, then the experience of Italy becomes even more wonderful. On behalf of my family, thank you so much for the website, the honesty, and the reality of the information and photos. Perugina was more than we could have ever expected, and it should be booked year-round.
Enjoyed Most:
Every room was what we wanted it to be. It was spotless, and beautiful, and "ready" for our arrival. What we wanted when we went to the RentVillas website was to find a place that was big enough for our family, close enough that we could walk within the great Etruscan walls of the city, and central to bus routes, and the train station. Perugina afforded us all of that, so it was always good to get back to the apartment at night - even with the 60 stair walk-up which tested the leg muscles on a daily basis. We needed the exercise, so it was all right.
The kitchen was fully stocked, the bathrooms beautiful, the bedrooms adorned with wonderful art, and the "great room" upstairs off the kitchen was an ideal place to unwind at the end of an Italian day.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The only thing that didn't work was the television, but then we realized that maybe, for once, we didn't need it, for the views off the balcony and out of every window were enough.
Surrounding Area:
The abbey apartment looked over the rooftops of the Cloister and the Bell Tower of the Church of Santa Maria Nuova.
Check In Out:
As promised, the housekeeper was there the day we left, with our return deposit and the fees we had to pay for electricity, etc. were nominal. There were no hidden costs or surprises and that was good.

Enjoyed Most:
It is a beautiful apartment with a wonderful view out over the countryside from the small terrace and a view of Assisi from the kitchen window. All the furniture was very nice, and the owner was very nice and helpful.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The many, many stairs - it is two floors up to the apartment, and another floor to the kitchen, which makes taking suitcases and groceries up, a big task. It is quite a long walk uphill to the center to do any grocery shopping. Without a car you are really lost. Although it is easier with a car and having the parking right there in the cloister. It would be nice if the cable TV had at least one or two English stations.
Surrounding Area:
The nearest smaller towns were a good 15 miles. We enjoyed Assisi and Lake Trasimeno and Cortona. But going out was a always a drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
The kitchen had no salt and pepper or sugar or coffee filters. It would be nice if there was small care package that had a few basics. The bathrooms had toilet paper and towels but no soap.
We had a very nice dinner at Villa Perugia, a little out of the center.
Check In Out:
We called the owner when we arrived in town and she was there at the apartment when we got there. She was very nice and gave us all the instructions and info. We had her cell phone for any problems.
