This pretty house is situated in the heart of the village of Cairanne, famous for its vineyards. The L-shaped village house is several centuries old, with the façade most recently constructed in 1930. Although located in the center of the village, the house is in a very quiet neighborhood. The property is situated on almost 2 hectares (4.9 acres) of land and has a garden with a natural spring and many trees and flowers. The property is shaded on the courtyard side of the house by two large plane trees that are 200 years old. On the vineyard side there is a swimming pool (9mX 4.5m, depth 1.8m) which looks out onto the vineyards and olive trees. The pool is open from June to September and is fenced with a wire-netting (1.3 m high), and it is located 8 meters from the house. There are two large terraces: one on the courtyard side (350 m2) and one on the pool side (200 m2). There are three outdoor tables, six deck chairs, three arm chairs, and a petanque game area. There is night lighting in the pool and courtyard areas. There is a charcoal barbecue on the terrace on the pool side. There is still an old wine cellar, wine vats and stables. There is space for two cars in the courtyard, and one in the garage. A car is not necessary for shopping, since shops in the village are within walking distance. Vaison la Romaine and Orange are 14km, Avignon is 40km, and Carpentras 22km away.

275 m2 There are three entrances to the property into the kitchendining are the most common, into the small living room on the ground floor, and by the outside staircase which leads to the living room on the first floor. The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven, microwave, refrigeratorfreezer, 7-burner cook top, two sinks, dishwasher, TV, telephone, bar, and access to the terrace. There is also a laundry room with a washing machine, shelves, a WC, and a shower room. To the left of the kitchen there is a door leading to the garage. To the right there is a librarystudy. There are stairs to a small living room with a TV, fireplace and telephone. First floor In the kitchen there are also stairs 15 steps up to a living room 46m2 with TV, telephone and fireplace. From this room there is a door on the right leading to a bedroom with a queen-size bed, an extra small single bed, a TV, and an en-suite bathroom with shower, sink and WC. From this bedroom there is a corridor where there are stairs leading to the ground floor between the library and the small living room. After the staircase there is another bedroom with a standard double bed, a TV, and an en suite bathroom with sink, bidet, tub with handheld showerhead and an enclosed WC. To the left of the living room there is a corridor, and on the left side there is a queen bedroom with a TV. There is also a bedroom with a standard double bed. Across the corridor there is a bathroom with tub with handheld showerhead, sink and WC. The two bedrooms share this bathroom. All of the bedrooms face the garden, except for the last bedroom which faces the pool. There is access to the pool and terrace from the first floor living room. Please note There are many levels and stairs within this property. The amenities include the following washing machine, dishwasher, CD player, radio, TV, maid service 4 hours a week, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, toaster, American coffee maker, barbecue, and telephone. The amenities available for an extra fee are the following cook, extra maid service, mountain bikes, babysitter, etc.

The diversity of activities...wineries everywhere with top quality wines of Gigondas, Cotes du Rhone especially in Cairanne itself, great hiking and biking around Mt. Ventoux, outstanding markets held in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and Vaison la Romaine and a sophisticated "big city" experience in Avignon.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You were actually in the village of Cairanne for Les Cigales. Within minutes of walking were a small but adequate market for food and personal items, a fantastic butcher who, despite not speaking any English, could provide you with any cut of meat you desired and a fabulous boulangerie within 5 minutes who opened every morning at 6:00AM except Monday.
Tips or Restaurants:
We didn't sample any of the cafes in Cairanne but ate a number of times in Vaison la Romaine. All were excellent with very personable service. The only suggestion I'd make is that you have a modicum ability of French. It wasn't really necessary but made getting around much easier.
Directions:
None..they got us and all our parties right there. You will need a map of the region in conjunction with the directions.

Overall:
The proprietor is very welcoming. He is a doctor of nuclear medicine! His parents live next door, in a house with a common driveway and a common wall, but no sounds to bother hou. His father was a doctor in WW II, and is now 90. The owners invited us over for champagne one evening, and they proved a thoroughly delightful couple. Jacque speaks considerable English, by the way. He also got us into an unusual tour of the local cooperative cave, which is only a few blocks from the house. This was one of the more interesting tours I have seen, because it included clambering up over the vats to see the mechanics of the process, as well as sampling the results. The wines were also tasty, and the tasting room elegant enough.
Enjoyed Most:
House laid out wonderfully and very comfortably for privacy for a large group that went from newly marrieds, mother and toddler, long-term married grandparents and mother of the newlyweds. The fenced pool with a very generous deck area was a delightful break from the very hot days.
Unpleasant Surprises:
From the front bedroom, at least, which is the nicest bedroom, there was a surprising amount of late night and early morning traffic from cars going up the hill to the old village. Not of course by city standards, but for a tiny village.
Surrounding Area:
The countryside was lovely, the views of beautiful wine-growing country, lavender fields, walled hill towns, Mount Ventoux and Les Dentelles. There were pleny of day trips available for those who wanted them, or swimming and reading by the pool for those who didn't. There were also numerous wine caves, Orange with its mini-version of the Arc de Triomphe and its fabulously preserved amphitheater, and Carpentras to explore for those so inclined.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The village of Cairanne has very few facilities, though it does have a restaurant and a cafe and a couple of shops for food. But several towns were within a ten-minute drive. St. Cecile des Vignes, with restuarants, shops, an ATM, many shops was 1.5 miles from the house.
Tips or Restaurants:
We were surprised that the house which has not been rented very often. It didn't have fans during the hot summer, though with the windows left open at night and the house mostly close up during the day, it stayed comfortable enough. However, we bought and left one floor fan, and it made a very nice difference. The kitchen was well equipped. Some of the pillows were not hypoallergenic, if that matters to the particular renter. We did find some nice restaurants. Perhaps the nicest in the region, about a ten to fifteen minute drive is Bell Rive, with spectacular views over a large valley and beautifully landscaped grounds. We also had a quite excellent meal in St. Cecile, but I don't remember the name of the restaurant.

Overall:
The owners are wonderful, very friendly. We literally walked into a kitchen that was set up. They have a front outdoor table and a poolside outdoor table, so meals can be taken in the shade all day long.
Enjoyed Most:
It is a lovely villa in a pretty country town in Provence. The rooms are great, high ceilings, expansive. More rooms than we could use, and we spread out reasonably well. The pool was pretty, the yard and house well-kept. I kept staring at the magnificent curtains, hoping I could find them in a catalog back home, knowing that I probably can't duplicate their quality. The owners were very friendly and helpful, they had food and drink in the refrigerator for us, in case we were too tired to shop for ourselves the first day. They checked on us occasionally to show us how things worked, always willing to help. And there is a great market right outside of the property's gate, a boulangerie around the corner and a great bar and restaurant one street away. Provence was in our front yard.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Provence is filled with the sounds of cicadas, all day and late into the night. They sound like a garden sprinkler endlessly running. However, it soon becomes white noise and we did not hear it after a while. The property, however, is just wonderful. Peaceful, quiet except for the cicadas, lovely!
Surrounding Area:
Provence is beautiful countryside surrounded by purple mountains majesty. We were able to rent a car and travel from the Haut-Loire to Marseille on day trips.
Nearby Events or Locales:
This villa is steps from the small downtown of Cairanne. We walked to dinner a few times, it took three minutes!
Tips or Restaurants:
This place is self-contained, so can be perfect for a vacation where you stay on the property and venture a few feet into town and its also perfect for day trips. Provence is hot in the summertime, so it would have been an unhappy experience without the pool and the large cool rooms.
