Enjoyed Most:
Lucca is wonderful. Lots of shops and excellent espresso.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The apartment is noisy until about 1:00 am, when the restaurants close. We loved the apartment and the town and had a great time anyway, but if you have trouble sleeping or go to bed early, then this could be a problem for you.
Surrounding Area:
Bike rides around the top of the wall, strolling through the town.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The apartment is in the heart of Lucca.
Tips or Restaurants:
Baricentro on Via Fillungo has the best espresso. It is almost impossible to park within the walls. Best bet is to park outside the walls, or even better, don't bring a car.
Check In Out:
The housekeeper met us there, it all went smoothly.

Overall:
So glad we chose a property inside the walls of Lucca. With eight people it would have been a nightmare getting everyone ready at the same time. We just said we'd meet and picked a place, or went out separately.
Enjoyed Most:
The location was perfect. Restaurants, bistros, delis, coffee shops and shopping. Everything was within a short walk.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Everything's pretty good.
Surrounding Area:
Great restaurants, people, wine and beauty of the land.
Tips or Restaurants:
Almost all of the restaurants were good except for the one across from the apartment entrance, Barrella. We hired a guide who was born and lived in California most of her life and is now a citizen and resident of Lucca. she rented a van for nine and took us to Siena, Cinque Terra, San Gimignano, Barga, and a night trip to Pisa to see the tower at night. She took us to outstanding restaurants and shops where we were the only tourists. She also told us where to go in Lucca for the best in whatever. She acted as our guide, driver, communicator, advisor and friend. Great person - Doreen Lucchesi, and her number is in the Lucca telephone book.
Check In Out:
the key holder Mara does not speak English, but she points to the item she's talking about and shows you what she explaining. eg. how to turn the stove on. She is very nice.

Enjoyed Most:
The location is excellent, right on the Anfiteatro - a beautiful piazza. You are right in the heart of things and can walk to every thing. The size. The apt is very large and there is plenty of room for people to have their own space. In particular, the kitchen is very large.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Noise. On one side of the apt there are three bars and on the other side there are two restaurants. They are open until 1:00 in the morning. Because there is no A.C. you have to leave the windows open. So it comes down to a choice. If you want a great location and a nice large apt and you don't mind the noise then you will love this apt. Also, the apt needs a good cleaning. While it's obvious that the apt has been cleaned between tenets eg, the bathrooms were nice and clean. However,it looks as though it hasn't had a top to bottom cleaning in quite some time.
Surrounding Area:
Lucca is a wonderful city. Not as many tourists as Florence, Rome, Siena, etc. An easy city to do day trips from. You can go by car, bus or train. Biking on the walls of Lucca is fun.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You are right in the heart of Lucca.
Tips or Restaurants:
The apt is well equiped. Bring ear plugs for the nighttime noise. Lots of great restaurants in Lucca. We ate at 10 different ones and enjoyed them all. We liked Trattoria Canuleia the best because of the pretty garden. Lots of trattoria in the hills near the small town of Montecarlo for wine and olive oil.
Directions:
Very easy to find because it's on one of the main piazza's. There is also a good parking area not to far away, but because of one way streets, it is not easy to get to.

Overall:
We loved it!
Enjoyed Most:
We loved the apartment itself, as it was roomy and pleasant, but its location on the Anfiteatro made it very special. Our large windows overlooked the piazza, and it was fun just to watch the changing scene.
Unpleasant Surprises:
We had trouble with the plumbing for the bathtub. It flooded the adjacent bedroom. We weren't able to use the tub, but there was a good shower. Everything else was fine.
Surrounding Area:
Lucca is a very pleasant small city for a week's stay. It is easily accessible to Florence and Pisa by train, and one can make connections from there. It is not easily accessible to Siena by public transportation. We rented a car for that trip.
Tips or Restaurants:
Locanda Bucatino is a small restaurant outside the wall, a twenty-minute walk. Excellent regional food.
Check In Out:
The lady who greeted us was very helpful.

Overall: We were very pleased with the location. Because we were in a city anything and everything we needed was easily available.
Also the kitchen was well equipped and we were able to prepare meals. Enjoyed Most: The old walled city of Lucca, our windows overlooked the Piazza Anfiteartro. Unpleasant Surprises: The keyholder did not check in with us during the two week stay. It may have been a problem if we needed any help. Tips or Restaurants: Viareggio was a great day trip as was Barga (recommended by a local shopkeeper). We took our day trips by car. Negotiating the streets in Lucca is a challenge many streets are one-way or closed to vehicles. Parking is about a 15 minute walk from the apartment.
