Located above Sarzana in the hills between Liguria and Tuscany, this apartment in a tiny hilltop village was once the residence of the garrison defending the plain of the Luni Valley. Needless to say, its strategic position gives it breathtaking views overlooking the Apuane Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The village has only a couple of restaurant/cafes, but everything else you need can be found at the bottom of the hill. The nearest private beaches are in Marina di Carrara, where ferries travel daily between the Cinque Terre, Lerici, and Portovenere. At Bocca di Magra, boats service the beaches at Punta Bianca and Punta Corvo. There are also beaches in Lerici, Tellaro, Fiascherino, and Forte dei Marmi. The marble quarries in Carrara and the town of Pietrasanta are a 15-minute drive. Florence, Pisa, and Lucca are within reach by car or train. There are golf courses in Lerici, Forte dei Marmi, Rapallo, and Tirrenia.

An integrated part of the village's medieval walls, this multi-level accommodation is a private apartment dating back to the 1400's. Restored in 2000 with comfortable furnishings, it is on the outer edge of the village, surrounded by olive groves and chestnut trees. It has a private terrace with wonderful views.

Ground floor: There is a lovely country-style kitchen with a washing machine, dishwasher, freezer, and microwave. The large living/dining area has a fireplace and a terrace with views.
First Floor (main entrance): The main entrance leads into a second large living room with terrace. Via the terrace, the small tower is accessible.
Second Floor: There is one bedroom with a 160 cm queen-size bed and one bedroom with two twin beds. The bathroom has a toilet, sink, and tub with handheld shower head.
Tower: There is a downstairs bathroom with sink, toilet, tub, and handheld shower head, and a large upstairs bedroom with a queen-size bed and great views.

Overall:
It was a wonderful vacation, thanks for your help.
Enjoyed Most:
Lovely furnishings, beautiful view, well stocked with toiletries basic food stuffs. Charming village of Nicola. Good location for Liguria and Tuscany sightseeing. Owners were extremely helpful. It was just what we wanted; couldn't have been better.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Shower was a little temperamental; twin beds quite hard, but we really enjoyed it all.
Surrounding Area:
Covered the coast from Forte dei Marmi to Portofino. Visited Carrara mines, Lucca, and Sarzana. It was beautiful.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Ortonovo is the nearest town at the bottom of a very steep winding road. It was not an easy walk. You really do need a car.
Tips or Restaurants:
Locanda Della Marchesa, the restaurant in the town square of Nicola, is not to be missed. The food is wonderful, the owner extremely vivacious, a unique dining experience.

Enjoyed Most:
The property has a tremendous view of the sea. It is in an old and attractive village high on a hill, and very peaceful. The property has been tended with care.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Not much to complain about. The water pressure was a little low.
Surrounding Area:
Easy access to Le Cinque Terre and much of Tuscany.
Tips or Restaurants:
If you like fish, Jeri's in Lerici.
Check In Out:
The owner is very friendly and a pleasure to work with.

Enjoyed Most:
This is an exquisitely, well-maintained ancient fortress that is beautifully decorated and has a balcony that allows you to enjoys a vista of many miles that end at the sea. The balcony has a dining table and also allows you to pear into the town right below.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The charm but also the challenge of the neighborhood were the roosters that made quite a racket in the middle of the night. It seemed that was only heard from the master bedroom, which was very beautiful and we would not have given it up due to the serenading.
Surrounding Area:
We were situated between the Apuane Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea with amazing views of all of this. We could go to nearby beaches and have a backdrop of the Italian Alps right there.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We were in the town of Nicola, a small, non-tourist area, with windy cobblestone lanes that led you around a maze of interesting homes.
Tips or Restaurants:
While the Cinque Terre was the big draw for us, we did spend a day in the mountains which was unforgettable. We drove into Carrera and up a mountain pass looking for a spa which didn't really exist but, instead, got spectacular views on many, many hairpin turns to the top of a mountain. We ate lunch on an abandoned marble quarry site and, as was easy to do in this area, ended up the day at the beach.
Directions:
The road does not actually stop at the property. The building that you face before the very narrow turn to continue to climb up the road to park is the villa. It has a sign on the side of it and it is next to a little restaurant.
