About The Experience
Authentic Tuscan living suggests a key location with spectacular views of the countryside, a private farm for olive harvesting, and the most delicious meals in the world (prepared especially for you by the owner) ... all this and more is what you have to look forward to at this lovely farmhouse accommodation in Tuscany! Warm, welcoming, and pleasant, this Tuscany vacation rental is so lovingly taken care of, that you and your family will instantly feel at home. Whether you picture yourself exploring medieval hill towns, taking day trips to Florence and Siena, gazing out at the views of the Apennines and San Gimignano from the terrace, or simply relaxing by the pool, this holiday farmhouse in Tuscany is the perfect place to start!
Location Description

The farmhouse is located four kilometers from Barberino Val d'Elsa where there shops, restaurants, a great pizzeria, a market, a bank, and a post office. Dating back to the Middle Ages, Barberino Val d'Elsa marks the midway point between Siena and Florence. The village has an ancient church, castle, chapel, and beautiful views of the olive groves and vineyards that make up much of the Chianti Classico region. San Gimignano, a town you can see from the farmhouse, is a great place to go for a day trip. As one of the most visited towns in Tuscany, it is known for its rich history dating back to the Etruscan times. It is full of life and things to do. Popular attractions include the famous towers, the 12th century Duomo, the People's Palace, and several museums dedicated to artwork and archeology. There are also plenty of wine tasting tours, art galleries, shops, and delicious restaurants. Numerous celebrations and gatherings are held every year including a music festival featuring theater, ballet, and opera performances, and a Medieval Harvest festival where the people of San Gimignano dress up as knights, play medieval games, and have tournaments. Of course, you'll also want to visit Florence and Siena during your trip and a train station in Certaldo, which is only 15 minutes away from the property, can get you there easily and conveniently.

Nearby Attractions: Barberino Val d'Elsa (markets, shops, restaurants, pizzeria, bank, post office, ancient church, castle, chapel), Certaldo Alto, the Medieval village and birthplace of Boccaccio, Certaldo (train station), San Gimginano (towers, Duomo, People's Palace, museums, wine tasting, shops, restaurants, annual festivals)

Exterior Description
(2,000 m2/21,528 ft2)

Originally built in the 15th century, this farmhouse is also situated on a foundation dating back to Medieval Times. Located in a peaceful position on top of one of the Chianti hills and within the Archeological Park of Semifonte, there are spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and valleys, where you can see not only the Apennines, but San Gimignano as well. An interesting fact about the location is that the surrounding valley used to be the main road (via Francigena) from the north to the south of Europe for merchants and pilgrims. The garden features a small farm where olives are harvested for extra virgin olive oil. There is a terrace on the first floor furnished with a bench, table, and chairs, and a patio on the ground floor with a table, chairs, and umbrella and a private infinity swimming pool which is open from early May to the end of September (15m x 5m). The farmhouse is located on a quiet road with very little traffic, although wall covered with vines separates the property from the road. Parking is available within the grounds.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
Looking forward to going back. A memorable experience.
Enjoyed Most:
Delightful owners. Gorgeous views. Plenty of space.
Enjoyed Least:
We did not anticipate that heating and/or air conditioning would cost an extra 18 Euros/day.
Surrounding Area:
The beauty.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Petrognano, not within walking distance.
Tips or Restaurants:
Olive oil is provided. Bring cards or other games. They have an extensive library with English books. Many books are left by other renters. Having an Italy-compatible GSM cell phone is essential.
Directions:
We had trouble finding it; the owners finally came to our rescue, met us, and lead us to our destination.

Overall:
We had a wonderful week at our Tuscany retreat. After spending 4 days rushing about Rome and seeing the sights, it was a perfect contrast--very calming, and beautiful. Our hosts were friendly and very hospitable and spoke English fluently. They went above and beyond their host duties. Emma cooked us a special and very delicious Tuscan meal and then sat with us visiting and telling us about their life. Giancarlo went out of his way to drive us to a nearby glass factory, where we watched the artisans making various crystal wine glasses and beautiful pieces of glass sculpture. He provided an informative tour about how the glass was produced. It was one of the highlights of our entire trip.
Enjoyed Most:
The best thing about staying here was that it was a home base from which to explore the hill towns nearby, and all the wonderful sights. Emma and Giancarlo were very helpful, but not intrusive. It was quiet and if some of us wanted to take a break from sightseeing, they enjoyed a wonderful rejuvenating day at the villa. The accommodations were exemplary, with maid service provided daily for our convenience. The bathrooms were clean and modern, as was the kitchen, which was equipped with all convenient appliances. The new pool on the premises was great when the weather allowed. We loved it all!
Enjoyed Least:
The only thing that was a slight concern, was the presence of mosquitoes and small black bugs that got into the house at night. We managed nicely with insect repellent.
Surrounding Area:
We loved the beauty and serenity. It was great to be able to take day trips to the hill towns nearby. Using our GPS we were able to navigate easily. The roads and nearby towns were picturesque and fun to drive to and visit.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Barbarino di Val d'Elsa was about 4 kilometers away. Not really walkable, but there was a small grocery store there, which was great. Certaldo was 10 kilometers away with a train and bus station to travel further afield--we took the train to Florence for a day trip.
Tips or Restaurants:
We would suggest you bring insect repellent, swimsuits in season (beach towels were provided), and a good book to read for relaxing. For a wonderful dining experience, there is a quiet country trattoria about 1 kilometer away. Service and food were excellent. I don't have the name, but Emma could tell you. It was second only to Emma's home cooked meal!
Directions:
We used a GPS to go back and forth to the property. Once we were at the property, our GPS recorded the coordinates, and always made it easy to return 'home'. It was very helpful to have.
Check In Out:
Emma and Giancarlo were waiting for us and made us at home. Emma sat down with us, provided local wine and their own homegrown figs and cheese for refreshments, and gave us all the info we needed to make our stay enjoyable. She patiently answered all our questions.

Overall:
A very nice property which worked very well for our extended family: 11-year old twins, parents, and grandfather. Would recommend strongly to renters looking for a taste of rural Tuscany, but providing good access also to the main towns (Florence, Siena, etc).
Enjoyed Most:
Spectacular views from a spacious living room across the valley to San Gimignano. Very nice pool for cooling off at the end of the day. High standard of decor and upkeep to the house, as well as very friendly owners.
Surrounding Area:
A fantastic location up in the hills, so peaceful and quiet. But also ready driving (or train) access to Florence and Siena.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Could walk to Petrognano (about 1km) but apart from a restaurant, there is not much there (except farm houses).
Directions:
No problems with the map or directions.
Check In Out:
Very friendly and informative reception from the owners.
