- Location Description
This Florence rental is located right on the Piazza Santa Croce, a large piazza with the Santa Croce church at one end with many shops, restaurants, and old palazzo on either side. All of the major sites of Renaissance Florence are within a short walk, including the Piazza Signoria, the Uffizi Gallery and the Duomo. The Santa Maria Novella train station is a 15-minute walk, and the closest bus stop is right at the base of the piazza.
Nearby Attractions:The Santa Croce quarter is located on the southeastern part of the historic center of Florence. Since the Middle Ages, it was an area specializing in leather. In fact, today it is still filled with leather shops! The large Santa Croce Church, filled with famous frescoes and tombs of some of the city’s greats, is the main structure of the quarter. The piazza in front of the church is filled day and night with tourists and locals. Some of the best gelato shops and restaurants can be found in this neighborhood. Piazza dei Ciompi has a daily flea market as well as a large monthly market (last Sunday). Plaz, located across from the 16th century Loggia del Pesce is a fun and casual place to stop for a drink and live music.

The palazzo has thirteen apartments, many with views of the Piazza Santa Croce and the interior garden. Although there is no public parking nearby, a paid parking lot is in the neighborhood, just across Piazza Santa Croce. The price varies according to car size: 20/30 euros per day.

Originally used as an artist's studio this fourth floor apartment has been converted into a comfortable one-bedroom with great views. Nineteen wooden steps from the elevator bring you to the apartment entrance. The living area is furnished with comfortable wicker sofas and a dining area which seats 4. The living area and kitchen have screened-in skylights which create a light and bright atmosphere. Architectural details include original wood beam ceilings and columns. The bedroom is furnished with a queen-size bed (160 cm) that can be divided into twin-beds. The bathroom has a WC, sink and shower. The apartment also features a compact but well equipped kitchen with refrigerator, gas stove, electric oven, microwave oven, toaster, and a wood burning oven/fireplace. The view overlooks the Piazza, the Duomo and other sights. The apartment is air-conditioned by two wall units, one in the living room and one in the bedroom.

Enjoyed Most:
The views were great. I felt like we was right in the middle of things. The apartment was well furnished, comfortable and bright...everything i imagined and more.
Enjoyed Least:
The bathroom was a little small...it was difficult for two people to use at the same time, but hardly a problem given the apartment's other amenities. I do suggest that the front door key and lock be adjusted, as they were difficult to operate. Although not a concern for us, some people may not like the bedroom overlooking Piazza Santa Croce. It's noisy in the late evenings and some may find that objectionable. We left our windows open and weren't bothered in the least,, however. A good set of earplugs might help to eliminate the problem for those who would find the noise objectionable....we wouldn't trade the view or the experience.
Surrounding Area:
We loved being located on Piazza Santa Croce. It was busy and active but far from the maddening tourist centers. Looking out at the Duomo and the church of Santa Croce every morning and evening was very special.
Nearby Events or Locales:
We walked all over Florence including the areas around the Piazzale Michelangelo and Fotrezza Belvedere.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our favorite restaurant of all those we visited while vacationing in Italy is Il Cibreo, via dei Macci. we went twice during our stay in Florence and weren't disappointed either time. It was a unique and creative experience. The food, the service and the ambiance....all excellent!

Enjoyed Most:
Location, location, location. The area around Santa Croce is our favorite in downtown Florence. It is within minutes of everything.
Enjoyed Least:
Apparently Piazza Santa Croce is used for outdoor entertainment events fairly often. A few weeks before we arrived there had been a historic soccer game, and the week after we left Bernigni was going to do Dante. This would be a huge plus if you were there for the event itself because you could watch from your window. However, if you happen to be there the week before, this is a huge disadvantage. For some reason it takes an entire week for the crew to put up the bleachers. This not only mars the view, and renders the square completely useless (our son had enjoyed kicking around a soccer ball in the square), but it also means that there is constant banging of metal from sun up until sun down.
Surrounding Area:
What is not to enjoy??!!! Florence is a beautiful city. We found a market not far from this apartment, away from the Centro Storico. They had every kind of fresh fruit and vegetable and fresh cut meats, cheeses, breads, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Right in downtown Florence. Trains can take you just about anywhere. Try Lucca - a great little city to explore.
Tips or Restaurants:
Be careful of the electricity. We were there during the heat wave 95 - 98 for two weeks straight. Even so, we ventured out every day and only ran the air conditioning while we were in the apartment. The AC works incredibly, but it is expensive! We were charged almost 500 for two weeks of electricity!
As for local finds, we still maintain that the best pizza is at Ciro and Sons near the Medici Chapels; the best gelato is at Vivoli right next to Santa Croce! The best local grocery alimentari with really good fresh-made sandwiches is right across from Vivoli run by Stefano and his wife, and the best trip to Chianti from Florence is the Accidental Tourist.
