This ancient country home is located along a section of the Francigena-- the ancient pilgrimage route from Cantebury to Rome. It is seated on a hill overlooking the Elsa Valley and the town of San Gimignano. The area around San Gimignano, midway between Siena and Florence, is well known for its beautiful landscape and the richness of its artistic and historic towns, including Monteriggioni, Siena, Volterra, Certaldo, Radda, and Greve-- which together form the heart of the Chianti Classico region. All around you will find the countryside dotted with abbeys, castles, trattorias, restaurants, and DOC vineyards. Nearby San Gimignano is well known for its towers and rich history dating back to Etruscan times. It has seen many ups and downs throughout history, but San Gimignano has survived, and today it is very well preserved-- almost just as it was in its Medieval prime! It is a wonderful place to wander and explore, and major sights include the 12th century Duomo, the People's Palace, and museums dedicated to artwork and archeology. There are also countless other churches, buildings, and fortresses to explore-- and of course the towers! And then there's Siena, another wonderfully preserved example of the Tuscan Middle Ages, in both architecture and culture. Filled with Gothic palaces, churches, and museums, it is also famed for its bi-annual bareback horse race, held on July 2, August 16. Distances below are from San Gimignano, 10 km away from this rental.
