About The Experience
Sit out on the terrace of this apartment in Liguria to enjoy your morning tea as you watch the boats come and go in the Gulf of Poets, as did Byron and Shelley before you. When you've fully wakened, you can spend the day exploring the village of Portovenere, right outside the door of this Liguria accommodation, or take a ferry to the Cinque Terre. After an amazing authentic Italian dinner, you'll return to this Italian Riviera rental to watch the boats again—this time in the dark, with their twinkling lights bobbing back and forth over the water.
Location Description

Located in the medieval village of Portovenere, this compact apartment offers a panoramic view of all that is easily available. At the end of the road, you will find a grocery store, newsstand, pharmacy, and the waterfront shopping area. Further in town is the ancient castle and fortress, dating back to the 10th century. Once in Portovenere, it is very easy to take ferries or busses to the Cinque Terre, La Spezia, Palmari Island, Tellaro, and Lerici, where you can get a true view of the local Mediterranean life. You can hike any of the diverse and wide-ranging network of trails of the Cinque Terre, taking in the gorgeous landscape. Unwind at the near beaches of L'Arenella, Royal, and L'Olivo, which welcome you with clear water and pebbly sand. There is a 9-hole golf course in Lerici, and an 18-hole course in Forte dei Marmi.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
We absolutely loved the location. It was very close to many sites for day trips. The food in Portovenere was out of this world.
Enjoyed Most:
The view of the bay from the balcony was fantastic.
Enjoyed Least:
The hot water heater was not working when we got there on Saturday night around 9 PM. Apparently the boiler went out. They couldn't get anyone to fix it until Monday. By Tuesday afternoon we had hot water. The owner wasn't there but her property manager was very prompt at returning calls and resolving the problem.
Surrounding Area:
The town was fantastic to just relax, people watch, and of course sample the best food in the world. Lots of places to experience for day trips and also daily walks. It had close proximity to Cinque Terre and Tuscan villages.
Nearby Events or Locales:
La Grazie was close but we usually walked all around town then took off daily for an adventure about 30 minutes away by car.
Tips or Restaurants:
All the resturants on the shoreline at Portovenere were fabulous. A person must try all gelato shops, just to compare! We also enjoyed getting food for the villa at the local shops to have on the balcony in the mornings and after a long day of sightseeing.
Directions:
Highly recommend getting a GPS for all the traveling as the street signs are not that clearly marked. We followed our GPS completely and didn't have any problems. We didn't take the train to any other towns because we had the car but many other folks we visited with did and had good experiences with that form of transportation.

Overall:
Overall very good. Everything as described.
Enjoyed Most:
The view and the very nice furnishings.
Enjoyed Least:
Air conditioning did not reach master bedroom so we had to sleep in the second bedroom which had twin beds. The A/C did reach this bedroom so we were able to sleep comfortably. It was extremely hot during our stay so this was understandable. Editor's Note: There is one AC unit that is usually sufficient to cook the whole apartment.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful local people. Relatively inexpensive compared to the rest of Italy. Wonderful swimming in the beautiful sea every day.
Directions:
The taxi was expensive. Editor's Note: The taxi from La Spezia train station is about 30 Euros.

Overall:
We loved every aspect of our visit. Our accommodation was ideal. The only thing you have to be prepared for are many stairs/steps to climb. However, once climbed, you will never regret the spectacular view afforded from balcony, living room bedroom windows. Old Italian atmosphere is exceptional in this beautiful town of Portovenere. We were totally happy to just be there, each day walking along its ancients streets, in and out of the shops, restaurants, and ruins. A grocery was at the foot of the hill providing just what we needed. The food was good. The service relaxed and excellent in each place we visited. Our generous and charming host, Sarah, met us conveniently on our first day, leading our rented car to our destination. We did not contact her again until our day of departure when she once again sent us on our way very efficiently. Bravo, Sarah!
Enjoyed Most:
The location, convenience, and authentic beauty.
Enjoyed Least:
Can't think of a thing. We are healthier due to the walks.
Surrounding Area:
This ancient village is rich with history and atmosphere. The surrounding Bay is lovely. We loved the Cinque Terre boat tour and the "Lovers Walk" between villages. Be sure to take or purchase a padlock to represent leaving your love and heart in the Cinque Terre.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The five Cinque Terre were easily accessed by boat or hiking to Riomaggiore. The athletic types would definitely hike.
Tips or Restaurants:
Our objective was to eat at different restaurants each time and all were enjoyable. Buy pesto, their hard bread, and white wine of the area for a maximum taste of the Cinque Terre. Bring good walking shoes, as well as enthusiasm and energy for hiking and boating. All ages can enjoy just "being" or being active. It is lovely. Layered clothing is most desirable depending upon the season of the year.
Directions:
We rented a car at EuroCar where they gave us maps/good directions to begin. Sarah, our host, met us in the nearby large community of La Spezia and escorted us to I Poeti. All was most helpful. Study the Italian/International road sign before arrival and you will be ahead of the game. Also, be sure to get appropriate amount of Euros upon arrival to avoid unecessary exhange problems.
