Overall:
Outstanding! What a great way to vacation. The view from the villa was spectacular, the locals friendly and helpful, and we saved a ton of money by not having to eat out all the time.
Enjoyed Most:
Definitely the view. Wonderful patio overlooking the ocean and the city. We spent lots of hours out there. Sunset and a great glass of wine...hard to beat.
Enjoyed Least:
The upstairs part of the villa is a separate rental. Our upstairs neighbors were a nice couple from England but it was a little strange to hear them up there.
Surrounding Area:
The location of the villa is central to restaurants, shopping, and the central area of Positano. Very convenient for getting around. There is certainly no need of a car.

It's less than 5 minutes to the shops and restaurants of Positano.
Tips or Restaurants:
The RentVillas "How to Live Like an Italian" book was very helpful. There are some very good ideas about what to bring. There are a number of very good restaurants in the area. Chez Black in central Positano was good, but by far our best meal was at Dona Rosa in Montepertuso. It's a short taxi ride up the mountain to one of the best meals ever! The wine list is also very good.
Directions:
A car service picked us up from the train station and drove us directly to the villa. I highly recommend the car service upon arrival. It's not that much more expensive and was a simple and relaxing way to transfer to the villa. It's about an hour and a half drive to the villa from Naples. You could take a bus or take a taxi to the marina and take a ferry, but for the hassle and inconvenience, spend the 100 euros and go with the car service. Especially if you are just arriving from the US and haven't slept in 24 hours!
Check In Out:
No problems at all. The car service called ahead and they were waiting for us at the villa when we arrived. The villa was neat and clean and well stocked with wine, bread, cheese, pasta, coffee, eggs, etc... Everything we needed without having to run out to the grocery store.

All of the steps to get to and from the villa. Plus the bathroom upstairs was hard to use because the shower door handle was missing - and it flooded every time I showered. Editor's Note: The shower door handle has been fixed. August 2007

Enjoyed Most:
The apartment is spacious, with stunning views from all the living areas. The apartment itself is very attractive, although quite cluttered. Does anyone really need 16 pottery owls in a bathroom? The terrace garden is a lovely feature. It is a very well located apartment. Although Positano is notorious for its steps, this apartment is well placed; it is located 50 steps down from the main street, so getting luggage in and out is not a big problem. The bus stop is a 5-minute stroll and the main beach and town centre is an easy 10 minutes away.
Enjoyed Least:
We were horrified to be charged more than 150 euros for utilities for the week. Granted, November can be cool (heating costs), but cleaning is 100 euros which at least is notified up front, and transfers to-from Naples will add another 100 euro each way. This is before you even start eating - Positano is not a place to find value for money! The master bedroom was large and airy but the second bedroom is cramped and unattractive. In both rooms the beds and bedding were old and uncomfortable. Water pressure is very poor, with the downstairs shower almost unusable.
Surrounding Area:
Even out of season, public transport is regular and reliable, very cheap and far less stressful than driving. Day trips to Ravello, Amalfi and Sorrento are easy and worthwhile with the bus trips back and forth along the Amalfi coast an absolute highlight in their own right. Positano pretty much shuts down at the end of October, the few restaurants that remain open are mediocre and expensive and even the locals seem to have deserted the place.

The apartment is very close to the centre of town, a small grocery store and butcher are five minutes away.

Apart from the bedding and plumbing the apartment is well-maintained and well equipped.

The beautiful garden terrace, and proximity to the town were fantastic.
Enjoyed Least:
The shower was a bit tricky, even by Italian standards. Also, there was a little bit of noise from the main street above the house.

Positano was a mere 5 minutes down the main road
Tips or Restaurants:
Take one of the boat trips with Salvatore e Genaro. Book at their stand on the quay at Positano - their trip to Capri was truly memorable, not least because of Genaro himself! Also, we didn't drive to Positano, but rented a car for a day in the town - a little Smart car that was perfect to do a trip out to Pompeii, and all along the coast.

Overall:
Would highly recommend the property to anyone staying in Positano. Lots of space and first class view of the town and sea.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was fantastic as was the large patio to sit out on. Our daughter enjoyed the extra space to play while we lingered enjoying the view and wine.
Enjoyed Least:
Bit of a musty smell given the humidity and dampness. Bathrooms, and in particular, the showers, should be redone; the rooms are soaked each time they are in use.

Directions:
We used a driver recommended by the manager who took us directly to the villa from the Naples airport. Given the challenges of the trip from Naples to the villa, would highly recommend this option. No car is needed or recommended while at the villa.

Enjoyed Most:
The view and the quiet were wonderful; it was a very relaxing vacation
Enjoyed Least:
The bathrooms; the shower spilled all over the bathroom, and the water pressure was low. It would have helped if there were some soap and extra toilet paper so we would not have to go out right away and buy it. There were no clear instructions in English how to use the washing machine.

Very charming and colorful.
Tips or Restaurants:
I was not aware that the cleaning lady came every other day, so we were very surprised when we came back from a walk and it looked like somebody had been there.

Enjoyed Most:
If you're looking for an exceptional view, this is the place. Every night we would sit outside in the private garden about the size of a basketball half-court and drink a bottle or two of wine while we watched the sun go down. You'll find fragarant flowers and lemon and lime trees all around you. It's really hard to express how fantastic it was to just watch the ferries and small craft come in and out of tha marina at Spiaggia Grande from your own garden perch. All the rooms except the bathrooms at this property face the sea with large French doors. At night, we just opened then all up and slept with a light breeze blowing through the house. We discovered the villa also has a record player! We hadn't seen one in years, and proceeded to play the owner's collection of Beatles, David Bowie, U2, Cure and Smiths albums whenever we were sitting outside. Wonderful!
Enjoyed Least:
There was nothing we didn't like about the property, but here are a few things to be aware of: The villa advertises AC, and it does exist, but in the form of two large, heavy portable units, both of which were upstairs. Carrying one down to the main living space would have required more effort than we were willing to expend during vacation, so we didn't bother with AC. Also, the wiring in this house is understandably old. I doubt we could have run both machines at the same time without blowing a fuse. If you use the combination washer-dryer, don't try out the dryer. As we discovered, it will trip your electric breakers every time you turn it on even if the refrigerator and all other electric appliances are off. FYI, the breaker box is outside the villa by way of the kitchen door. Use the drying rack outside instead. You also do need to be in fairly good shape to traverse the stairs from and to the main street and around Positano in general. We're both runners, so it was fine.
Surrounding Area:
The villa is well situated -- It is near enough to central Positano to be convenient, but far enough away where you won't have throngs of day-trippers jamming up the immediate area.
Nearby Events or Locales:
You'll find that Spiaggia Grande is perhaps a 10-15 minute walk depending on how fast you move. There is a small grocery perhaps 5 minutes away when you exit the villa's staircase, take a left, walk 3-4 minutes and you'll see a narrow staircase on your left heading down...take it, and at the bottom you'll see another staircase going up to the store. You can purchase all the necessities here.
Tips or Restaurants:
While there are two bedrooms here, the first is much nicer than the second. If you bring two couples, plan on splitting your time between the two.The best restaurant we found was Il Guarracino, hands down. They had a Penne Arabbiata to die for, as well as a fantastic lemon veal scallopine. The quality of the food was much, much better than the big name places near Spaiggia Grande that you're likely to read about. It was also less expensive. To get there, walk down to Spaggia Grande, and take the path on the far right of the Piazza towards Fornillo beach...it's about a five minute walk, great views there, too!. Le Terrazze, to the FAR left of Spaigga Grande was also quite good, but more expensive and somewhat pretentious. If you're a beach goer as we are, don't bother with the main Spaiggia Grande beach. Instead, head to Fornillo. It is smaller, and has a fantastic cheap little place to eat. You can either walk there following the same instructions above, just keep walking past Il Guarracino for another 3-4 minutes OR, take a small, free shuttle boat from the marina at Spiaggia Grande.

Overall:
Positano is such a great town. The shopping, restraunts, shops are all wonderful. We ate in at the Villa about half the time, using the most fresh and delicious ingredients the area has to offer. At Casa Mare, we had the best of all vacation options.
Enjoyed Most:
The view, the structual beauty of the Roman arches, and the garden.
Enjoyed Least:
We couldn't stay longer. Maybe they could increase the pressure in the shower a bit.

Positano's town center was a short 5 minute walk from the property.
Tips or Restaurants:
Definitely try your best Italian recipes. The meat, fish and produce is molte bene. Drive carefully. Another great way to get to the property is by boat from Naples.
