LocationDescription

Located in southeastern Sicily in the province of Ragusa, this villa is just 1 km from the charming medieval village of Modica (with great shopping, boutiques and restaurants). The city of Modica, with its Baroque architecture, splendid views, history, art treasures, churches, palaces and decorated portals, has been designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO. There is a warm, protected beach in nearby Marina di Modica, 20 minutes by car. The Baroque city of Noto is 30 minutes east of the property.

ExteriorDescription

(500 m2) The villa was partially constructed in 1850 and then completed in 1978. Outdoor amenities include a nicely landscaped garden with a gazebo and Roman-style swimming pool (6m x 12m, 1.3-4m deep, open all year). For child safety, the three entrance points to the pool are gated. There are three exterior verandas, including one enclosed in glass. Automatic wrought iron gates control access to the property. Although there is access road 50 m from the villa, there is virtually no traffic noise. There is private parking for 10 cars.

InteriorDescription

To the immediate right of the living room there is a double bedroom with king-size bed and access to a veranda. On the left hand side of the living room there is an eat-in kitchen with a large American-style refrigerator, a dishwasher, and seating for 8 people. Off the kitchen there is a laundry room with WC and washing machine. An adjacent supply room leads to a large covered patio with barbecue and chairs. A staircase leads down to the lower veranda and swimming pool. Returning to the living room, a sharp left-hand turn leads to the villa's most recent addition. Off the hallway there is one twin-bedded room with air conditioning and access to the veranda. There is a separate bathroom shower with twin sinks. There is a second twin-bedded room, also with air conditioning, and access to the veranda. The third bedroom has a king-size bed and a balcony overlooking the valley. Questions and Answers From Our Clients

(Click the question to view the answer)
Q: 1. Would you stay here again? 2. What condition was the house in? The pool? 3. What month did you stay? Warm? 4. Did you enjoy Modica? 5. How close is the nearest beach, and was it nice? 6. Anything else you wish someone had told you before booking? Thank you very much. Kevin

A: 1. Yes 2. Very good condition, very well equipped. Pool was excellent size. 3. July. Very hot. 4. Yes, enjoyed Modica. Only stayed for a week here which is enough. Travelled to a few other places within half an hour which I would recommend. 5. Cannot remember about beach as we prefer a pool. Did visit a beach for jet ski-ing though which was very nice indeed. Sorry, forgot location. 6. You need a car for this villa. Too far to walk to village, beaches, etc.

Q: Is there much to do in the area of this villa? Do we absolutely need a car? How far is the closest village? We have 7 adults (unrelated) - is there enough sleeping room for all of us?

A: Hi, You definitely need a car. It is so beautiful and there is plenty of room in the house for 7 adults. There are 4 bedrooms with balconies. Only one has twin beds...the others are doubles and one queen. Beautiful views and very kind owners. It is very private and gated. A complete kitchen and wonderful living room. Beautiful pool and orange and lemon trees. Modica is just about 5 minutes , by car, down the hill. It is too windy and narrow to walk it. The village is lovely with great shopping and food. There are wonderful caves and it is only about 30 minutes to the Mediterranean. Lots of wonderful villages and ruins to explore on day trips. We so enjoyed it. My daughter was living in Palermo for 10 months and made so many friends that she is going back every year.....this July for 2 weeks.. The Sicilians are amazingly generous and kind. Fond memories. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

A: You will need a car, the nearest village is about a mile, however if you walk to it you will have to walk on the road and it is down a long stepp hill. We travelled in a party of seven, 2 couples shared double rooms and 2 of our teenage kids shared a twin room with another adult in a twin room alone. Can highly reccomend this villa as it is beautiful and worth every penny. Plenty to do and see in the area if you have a car.

    Customer Reviews

    Overall:
It was a very pleasant, peaceful place to stay, very good for families with spacious rooms and terraces.
    Enjoyed Most:
The pool area was especially attractive and relaxing even though it was too cool in late March to swim. The property owner obviously works very hard to maintain it and he provided more kitchen supplies and food than we have ever experienced before in our several European rentals. There was a delicious lasagna, salad, potatoes, wine, water and milk waiting for us when we arrived. Also supplied were olive oil, balsamic vinegar, tomatoes, sugar, flour, coffee and oranges we could pick off the tree beside the pool. There was even a hair dryer for our use. The linen supply was extremely generous: sheets, towels; but the Italians apparently do not use washcloths.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The electric coffee maker took an hour and a half to brew 8 cups of coffee! The bathrooms are not en suite.
    Surrounding Area:
It was a good base for day trips to the beach, Ragusa, Siracusa, Noto, the Castle at Donnafugata. Mt. Etna a bit of a stretch at 2 1/2 hours. The villa is located on a hill with an excellent view of the town on the opposite hill.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
The villa is located just on the outskirts of Modica, not really within walking distance. A car is needed.
    Tips or Restaurants:
We got good restaurant recommendations from the owner and other local people whom we asked. One was in Hotel San Benedetto and another was La Rustica.
    Directions:
    Did not use a GPS.
    Check In Out:
The owner is friendly, gracious, very accommodating and speaks perfect English.

    Overall:
Our overall experience was idyllic. I personally loved the tranquility! Villa Modica really did become "our" villa for seven days!
    Enjoyed Most:
The views, the scent of the jasmine, the fresh herbs that we could use in our cooking, and the colourful flowers throughout the property.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
    The pool was rather chilly.
    Surrounding Area:
The solitude, the countryside, access to walks in the fields, proximity to town by vehicle.
    Tips or Restaurants:
The owners stocked the cupboards and the refrigerator very well! We were so grateful indeed! Additionally, there was delectable food in the oven for our first evening. How lovely! What would be advantageous is a working knowledge of Italian and a small phrasebook, particularly with restaurant-cuisine vocabulary.
    Check In Out:
The owner handled this professionally and expediently. When we learned that he had lived in Canada, we all instantly bonded!

    Overall:
We had a marvelous time exploring Modica and the surrounding area. The villa was perfect for our group of 2 parents, 2 children and 3 grandparents - because everyone had their own space and there was plenty of room. The scenery around the villa was exquisite and we enjoyed it from the lovely pool area and the sun room. The owner was very friendly and helpful, giving us good recommendations and taking us to the local restaurants where the locals go. We really appreciated having a stocked kitchen upon arrival as well as a homemade lasagna that we ate for our first meal in Sicily.
    Enjoyed Most:
The pool area and gardens were lovely and well tended. The landscaping was very tasteful. The views from the villa of the countryside and hills of Modica were lovely. The bedrooms were spacious and there was plenty of storage.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The kitchen was a bit dark--I wish there was a nicer dining area inside because it was too cold to eat dinner outside when we were there.
    Surrounding Area:
Gorgeous scenery. The towns of the Val de Noto were all within a short drive: Ragusa and Noto and Scicli. Baroque architecture was really nice.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Modica was within walking distance, but I would never walk on the road to town. It was too dangerous with no sidewalk or shoulder and lots of blind curves.
    Tips or Restaurants:
Remember that stores are closed during most afternoons, although they open in the evening. On Sundays it is difficult to buy anything. We found the villa to be very well stocked with basics such as coffee, cereal, fruit, vegetables, bread. Also nice that there were pantry items such as olive oil, vinegar, spices for those who like to cook. One of our best meals was prepared by 2 local women that the owner arranged for us. They cooked us a multi-course seafood feast! Highly recommend it.
