The villa is located five kilometers from Gambassi Terme, a small town about an hour southwest of Florence. In Gambassi Terme, one can find restaurants and shops with basic supplies. Pisa, Siena, and the fashionable Tyrrenian coast are only an hour away by car.

(150 hectares) This villa dates back to 1800, when it was a simple farming estate. A Swiss family purchased the property and built several unique hunting lodges that still accompany the villa today. 20 years later, the Finzi-Contini family of Florence purchased the property. They lived there until 1954, when the current owners took it over. The property features a sublime combination of Tuscan stone, cotto bricks, and rolling English lawns. Thanks to its location 500 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, soft breezes provide a welcome respite from the summer sun. The hunting lodges have been converted into residences—there are two large independent hunting lodges and a small woodsman's cottage. There are two additional houses which are adjacent to the owner's private farmhouse. Each of the five structures has its own history and distinct identity. They offer fabulous views, mature oak woods, and access to a vast nature reserve. This villa shares a swimming pool.

Two floors. Ground floor: A sunny lawn separates Villa Edera from Leccio Antico, a two-story guesthouse. A nice wooden door leads into the foyer. From here, a door leads to the living room; a staircase leads to the first floor. Through the door there is a small antechamber which connects the kitchen, the bedroom, and the bathroom. The kitchen is fully equipped (dishwasher) and furnished with an old marble table; a glass door leads out to loggia with a dining table. There is one double bedroom, Gialla, with a glass door leading to the garden. There is a living room with sofa, fireplace, and large wooden table. Glass doors also lead from the living room onto the terrace. First floor: There are three bedrooms: Marrone, Verde, and Rossa. Marrone has a double bed, a fireplace, and a private, large terrace. It has an en suite bathroom with shower. Rossa has a double bed, while Verde has twin beds. Rossa and Verde share an en suite bathroom with shower, situated in a connecting antechamber.

Overall:
The villa is so close to Villa Cacciatore that this could be a problem unless your party is renting both properties. I'd recommend La Sosta Antica as an adjunct rental to the larger house, but not to be rented on its own.
Enjoyed Most:
It was close to Villa Cacciatore, where the rest of our party was. It stayed cool, plus it had a ground floor bedroom and bath. As one of our party was in her late 80's this made her stay much more pleasant.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The kitchen is quite small. Also the washing machine was broken.
Surrounding Area:
Great places to visit abound nearby. Simply driving around the countryside is beautiful. We felt away from the hustle and crowds, yet were able to visit major destinations like Siena in less than an hour.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Gambassi Terme it was too far to walk, but just a 10-minute drive away.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring sunscreen and insect repellent. Consider asking the property manager to set up a catered dinner one night. We enjoyed that very much.

Enjoyed Most:
The owner was wonderful, welcomed us with a bottle of his olive oil, 3 bottles of his red wine, and two bottles of his white wine.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The proximity of the neighbors. The house next to ours has 9 bedrooms and is very close.
Surrounding Area:
It was about an hour from Florence by train and within many day trips by driving.
Tips or Restaurants:
There are many good restaurants along the roads leading up to the house.

Overall:
We became acquainted with several Italians in the area, restaurant owners and shop keepers, all of whom were very friendly and helpful. In general, we enjoyed it very much and look forward to our next trip to Italy.
Enjoyed Most:
The farmhouse was lovely, very comfortable and large with a completely equipped kitchen, 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. Upon our arrival, the owner presented us with a case containing 3 bottles of red wine, 2 bottles of white wine and a bottle of olive oil....all produced there on the farm.
He and his wife were extremely friendly, helpful and gracious.
Surrounding Area:
The estate is located south of Florence, very near the popular town of San Gimignano and the Chianti region. It was a simple matter to make day trips to many of the towns that we wanted to see in Tuscany. Going in February, we avoided the busy tourist season and yet the weather was lovely.
