About The Experience

Sample Old-World flavor in the Chianti, including an historic 9th century castle—once home to Machiavelli—and its surrounding hamlet. Choose an apartment in one of the village farmhouses, parsonage, or in the castle itself. Spend your time strolling about the hamlet and taking in the magnificent views, or take day trips throughout Tuscany, including Lucca, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and Volterra.

Location Description

The former home of one of Renaissance Italy's leading figures, this castle and its surrounding hamlet enjoy a hilltop location in the heart of the Chianti. The nearest towns are Montefiridolfi (2 km) and Bargino (2 km). The nearest food market is 2 km away. Additional shops, banks and a post office can be found in San Casciano.

Nearby Attractions: Be sure to experience the wines produced by the estate in their weekly wine tastings. Further afield, there are many other opportunities for wine tasting: La Sala Winery (San Casciano), Il Solatione Winery (Mercatale Val di Pesa), Cennatoio Winery and Villa Cafaggio Winery (Panzano). In Florence, explore Bargello and the Opera del Duomo which house two of the greatest collections of sculptures in the world. Along with the top museums like Uffizi, Galleria dell'Accademia, and Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, be sure to visit the Archeological Museum, the Museum of the History of Science and the Museo Stibbert, which has a famous collection of armor.

Customer Reviews

Overall:
Wonderful! The staff was very helpful and was able to communicate to us in English.
Enjoyed Most:
The view was extraordinary. We can't believe that we woke up to it every morning.
Enjoyed Least:
There was a slight road noise, since the highway was at the bottom of the hill.
Surrounding Area:
The small towns close by were enchanting to walk through and enjoy a gelato.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest small town was about 3 km away. It would be better to take a car given the hills and highway used to get here.
Tips or Restaurants:
The wine tasting was worth it. Jillian was very knowledgable about the area and about the wine.
Directions:
We used a GPS which was extremely helpful in navigating the area.

Overall:
We loved it here! The staff were so helpful and the grounds were stunning. The pool area was lovely, lots of space, decent privacy (we could hear the family in the room next to us). The views were spectacular and the location was perfect as we could drive to many parts of Tuscany within half hour or an hour.
Enjoyed Most:
Location, views, peacefulness of the property, and pool.
Enjoyed Least:
Unfortunately, there were no screens on the windows and no air conditioning, so we had to choose between having a really warm bedroom or having a lot of mosquitos and bugs!
Surrounding Area:
Close to everything! You definitely need a rental car (and highly recommend a GPS as the roads are difficult to navigate!), but we were able to drive to Lucca, San Gimignano, Florence, Pisa, and Montalcino all within easy day trips.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The smallest town was Bargino, which was right at the base of the long hill up to where the villa stands. It had a small grocery store and delicious restaurant! Within a 10 minute drive was a bigger town.
Tips or Restaurants:
We brought a GPS and that was our lifesaver. The small restaurant in Bargino (Trattoria da Bule) is absolutely lovely. It's worth the drive to Greve in Chianti as well as Panzano to visit 'the butcher of Tuscany' - so much fun! We had SUCH a great week here and were sad to say good bye!
Directions:
We used a GPS and it got us there easily.
Check In Out:
No issues at all with either checking in or out. The staff were accommodating and helpful in every way.

Overall:
Overall our visit was very pleasant. The staff was attentive and the property well maintained. The daily drive up and down the mountain to the villa was most exciting. The property served as an excellent focal point for our daily outings.
Enjoyed Most:
Its central location and the ease with which we could come and go.
Enjoyed Least:
The unit we had is not really conducive to a prolonged stay. We were there for two weeks and could have used a larger kitchen and extra rooms.
Surrounding Area:
The views were magnificent. The towns were most interesting and the local food and wine outstanding. We got what we were seeking which was a real earthy experience with the people the way they are.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Our nearest town was Borgino. While you could walk to it I don't recommend it. It would be too easy to become a hood ornament on one of the cars, trucks, or motor scooters that go whizzing by.
Tips or Restaurants:
Bring bug spray. This area of Tuscany is home to many mosquitos and if you sleep with the windows open you pay a heavy price.
Directions:
We used our Garmin supplemented by Google and had absolutely no problem coming from Rome.
Check In Out:
The reception staff was efficient and polite. Everything went smoothly. They even found me a rolling pin so I could make pasta in the apartment.
