- Location Description
The former home of one of Renaissance Italy's leading figures, this castle and its surrounding hamlet enjoy a hilltop location in the heart of the Chianti. The nearest towns are Montefiridolfi (2 km) and Bargino (2 km). The nearest food market is 2 km away. Additional shops, banks and a post office can be found in San Casciano.
Nearby Attractions: Be sure to experience the wines produced by the estate in their weekly wine tastings. Further afield, there are many other opportunities for wine tasting: La Sala Winery (San Casciano), Il Solatione Winery (Mercatale Val di Pesa), Cennatoio Winery and Villa Cafaggio Winery (Panzano). In Florence, explore Bargello and the Opera del Duomo which house two of the greatest collections of sculptures in the world. Along with the top museums like Uffizi, Galleria dell'Accademia, and Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, be sure to visit the Archeological Museum, the Museum of the History of Science and the Museo Stibbert, which has a famous collection of armor.

The castle dates back to the 9th century, while the hamlet is from the medieval period. The estate, which includes separate, independent apartments located in either the village farmhouses, parsonage, or the castle itself has amazing views of the Chianti hills. The castle is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. For information or assistance throughout the rental period, there is a reception office open every day. There is a shared swimming pool, open May to September, and a shared garden equipped with tables and chairs. There is a large parking area at the entrance of the hamlet. The road leading to the castle is paved.

First Floor: This apartment is situated on the first floor of one of the medieval village farmhouses. The spacious and bright living room is the focal point of the apartment. It has been decorated with antique furniture and modern paintings and equipped with all modern conveniences. The living room has been divided into a sitting room area with fireplace and two single sofa-beds, a dining area, and a kitchen area with stove, oven, Italian coffeemaker, and a dishwasher. This room enjoys a splendid view of the Pesa Valley. The bedroom has a double bed (150x180cm) and a view of the main entrance of the castle. There is a bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub.

Overall:
The property was exquisite with incredible views of the vineyards and olive orchards. The infinity pool was awesome as you looked out over endless landscape. We loved this oasis after being in Rome for five days. We would highly recommend breaking up your trip with a week in Tuscany.
Enjoyed Most:
Our unit was huge and had everything you could ever need. The staff was very helpful, pool was great. We barbecued one night--be sure to get accelerant available at Coop(a bag of ceramic stuff) in addition to the charcoal.
Surrounding Area:
Greve, Florence, San Casciano. We tried to visit Siena but the traffic and parking were bad so we came back to our villa and enjoyed the pool.
Nearby Events or Locales:
San Casciano is about 10 minutes away; no way you could walk there. The Coop in town was great but a little hard to find the first time. You have to have a car.

Overall:
A really lovely, tranquil setting. Staff at the property were great.
Enjoyed Most:
Very well maintained property in an amazing location, with lots of peace and quiet.
Enjoyed Least:
The beds. While the one bed in the bedroom was serviceable, if not great, the fold out and couch were extremely uncomfortable (and I'm not a whiner about beds). It's not really accurate to say the unit sleeps people in more than one room.
Surrounding Area:
Excellent restaurants in surrounding villages, easy access to off-the-beaten path Tuscany.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Not walking distance, as the property is at the top of a steep hill--but a short drive.
Tips or Restaurants:
Cinque di Vino restaurant in nearby San Casciano, superb. The property has a free Internet hotspot, which is very useful. If you pay for breakfast, it's good but simple. For Americans used to big breakfasts, you're better off eating there before you get on the road for the day than taking your chances elsewhere.

We used GPS, which was fine.

Overall:
The highlight of our 3 weeks in Italy.
Enjoyed Most:
Everything, the view from every window, the very helpful staff, and the beautiful, well-kept gardens.
Surrounding Area:
It was close to the main freeway. Beatiful countrysid; we discoverd lots of small villages.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Bargino. Machiavelli is set on the top of a large hill. Unless you were very fit walking, to the village would be a challenge.
Tips or Restaurants:
If arriving on the weekend, buy food supplies before you arrive as most shops close Saturday afternoon and Sundays.
Directions:
We used our own GPS and we downloaded maps before we left.
