 Machiavelli - Casa Niccolo |
 |
 |
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
Old-world flavor abounds in the Chianti, not the least among its charms an historic 9th century castle and its surrounding hamlet. While the castle itself was once a residence of Machiavelli himself, you can choose one of a number of accommodations: put up in one of the charming village farmhouses (modernized to accommodate traveler's needs) or treat yourself like the Prince himself and stay in the castle. Spend your time strolling through the hamlet, including gardens and vineyards, or go on a day excursion in Tuscany, including Volterra, San Gimignano, Siena, Lucca, and Florence.

An integral part of the hamlet, this farmhouse sits near the Castello on a hill overlooking the Pesa Valley. The nearest towns, Montefiridolfi and Bargino, are an unintrusive 2 km away, as is the nearest food market. If you find yourself a little too isolated, modern conveniences such as an internet cafe, a bank, and a post office, can be found in San Casciano (5 km).

(Entire estate 6000 m2) One of several medieval-era buildings, the farmhouse is an integral part of the hilltop village around the Castello di Machiavelli. A charming stone exterior, surrounded by a beautiful garden, looks down across the Pesa Valley and towards the Chianti hills. During your stay, you will have access to a shared swimming pool (6.5m x 17m, open April 30 to October 1) and your own private garden as well as one near the Castello (equipped with tables and chairs). For your convenience, a reception office is open Tuesday through Saturday, while a large parking area at the entrance of the hamlet ensures easy access. The castle itself may be reached by a paved road and is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

(70 m2) Ground floor: Step through your own private garden into the ground floor of an enchanting medieval farmhouse (updated, of course, with modern conveniences!). The ground floor includes the living room and a kitchen, while the first floor consists of a bedroom and bathroom. A sunken, well-lit living room boasts an ancient fireplace, a couch/sofa bed, a coffee table, and a table for dining. Open-beam ceilings, Kilim carpets, and antique furniture create a comfortable but rustic atmosphere. A cozy terra-cotta kitchen (two steps above the living room) with blue-and-white tiled counters provides a place for you to prepare your own authentic Italian cuisine.
First floor: Upstairs, lounge in the queen-sized bed, write home at the roll-top desk, or choose an outfit from the wardrobe. The attached bathroom is equipped with a Jacuzzi (with handheld showerhead), two sinks, a toilet, and a bidet. Windows look out onto the Pesa Valley.

Overall:
Nothing! Just GO VISIT TUSCANY!
Enjoyed Most:
It was unbelievably beautiful! The weather was gorgeous! It was close enough to the town and highway.
Unpleasant Surprises:
There were not many guests, but it was low season, and if you want peace and quiet, you couldn't ask for more
Surrounding Area:
The view from our bedroom was fantastic! There was a hammock hanging from two olive trees, and I enjoyed very much reading in the afternoon while on it.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Not walking distance, but good roads San Casciano in Val di Pesa
Tips or Restaurants:
All recommended restaurants were excellent. Particularly the Trattoria del Pesce in Bargino and Cantinella del Nonno in San Casciano. Bring a bathroom curtain and tacks if you don't want to flood the bathroom. Also, it was useful for us to bring some instant coffee for the first morning, although they can prepare breakfast for you if you want to. Cristiana, in the office was very helpful.
