When you're fully awake, you can spend the day exploring the village of Portovenere, right outside the door of this accommodation in Liguria, or take a ferry to the Cinque Terre. After an amazing authentic Italian dinner, you'll return to this apartment in Liguria to watch the boats again - this time in the dark, with their twinkling lights bobbing back and forth over the water.

Liguria faces the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the Gulf of Genoa in the center of its arc. Perfect for hiking, it is mountainous and hilly, as it is part of the Maritime Alps and the Ligurian Appenines. The hills plunge almost into the sea, forming a narrow coast-line, where you can admire the beautiful landscapes. It is in Liguria where you will find the picturesque seaside town of Portovenere. Many natives come here, so you will be witness to a true view of Italian life. Close enough to reach on foot, medieval Portovenere is where you can shop for groceries, eat in restaurants, visit the local sights, enjoy the beach at L’Arenella, Royal, or L’Olivo, frequent the waterfront shopping area, or catch a bus or water taxi to the Cinque Terre, La Spezia, and Palmaria Island. Cinque Terre (the Five Lands) represents a beautiful example of intact landscape. It is one of the best preserved natural areas of the Mediterranean. Featuring the crystal clear sea, and a varied and extensive network of paths, this is extremely popular for athletic enthusiasts. You can hike there, and take a ferry back to Portovenere at the end of the day. There is a 9-hole golf course in nearby Lerici, and an 18-hole course in Forte dei Marmi.

This apartment is located in a building that faces the water, just at the edge of town. It has a nice furnished terrace with panoramic views of the sea and the island of Palmaria. It is on the third floor, so be prepared to climb, as there is no elevator. Built in 1970, it was restored and redecorated in 2000. Another apartment, I Poeti, is located in a building next door. Renting both apartments is a good option for groups of 8.

(90m2) Third floor: The entrance leads into a bright living room/dining area. The dining table has seating for four. The living area has two comfortable couches and a TV. The living/dining room opens onto a terrace, with a table and chairs. The kitchen has a dishwasher, oven, cook-top, microwave, washing machine, and breakfast table with seating for two. Bedroom #1 offers a queen-size bed, and access onto the terrace. Bedroom #2 has two single beds, which can be joined together upon request to form a double bed. This bedroom has a view of the hillside. The two bedrooms share a small bathroom with a wash basin, toilet, and small tub with handheld shower head.

Q: We will not have a car so how easy is it to access the train ?
A: Hi Jacki
There is a fairly regular bus service from Portovenere (a stop is just down from I Poeti), that will take you to the train. It's a bit of a trek, but should be OK for getting there and leaving.
Once you're in Portovenere, the best way to access the train is via the boat service. Most of the other towns in the Cinque Terre are on the trainline, so just hop on the regular boat service, and jump off whenever you like.

A: You must take the La Spezia Bus out of Porto Venere (a one block walk from the apartment - also that point tis the turnaround point for the buses so they wait there) - one every hour or even every half hour during rush hours which takes about 45 minutes to La Spezia, and then take another bus (only a one stop - 5 minute ride) to the train station, then up or done the coast (Piza, Florence, Genoa, plus the trains to Cinque Terre)
A: Just goes to show that I am not on-line very often, I just got this e-mail and they are probably already on their trip!
It is very easy to get to the train station! One bus ride and a short walk to the station! You can catch the bus right down the hill from the villa and it's maybe a 20 minute bus ride with beautiful views all the way and bam your at the train station.

Overall:
Our experience in I Poeti 2 and Portovenere as a whole was wonderful. The apartment was very comfortable for 4 and is ideally located.
Enjoyed Most:
Definitely the balcony and the view - absolutely gorgeous!
Unpleasant Surprises:
We had 2 minor malfunctions but they were not really a big deal - and we passed them on to the owner. 1 Slow drain in the shower. The shower is new. 2 Air conditioner in the back bedroom leaked when running. The driveway is a hill and the apartment is up a few flights of stairs. A good thing to keep in mind when packing. I could see someone with health issues having a problem with hill and stairs. Actually you encounter hills and stairs throughout this whole region.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding area was gorgeous. There was a beach within walking distance and the water taxis and ferries were very conveniently located to explore neighboring gorgeous towns and beaches. There are some trails that start from the center of town and provide some beautiful views from above. The trails are hilly and have stairs.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The center of Portovenere is a few minutes walk from the apartment. The town has great shops, restaurants and really good people watching.
We happened to be there for the Festival of the White Madonna which was very special. The townspeople decorate their doors, windows, and alleyways in honor of the White Madonna of Portovenere and the evening culminates in a procession through town that is illuminated by torches set up throughout town and along the cliffs leading to San Pietro.
Tips or Restaurants:
We were there mid-August and it was hot, so pack accordingly. Remember you will be going up and down hills and stairs a lot. There is a market very close by and the kitchen is very well equipped. It is a good idea to bring mosquito repellent.
There is a very good trattoria in the center of town - near the original entrance to the village - I think it may be called Tre Toria - excellent grilled fish.
Also try Antica Osteria del Carugio - does not take reservations, is small, limited menu of lighter fare such as bean soup and octopus salad which were both great with carafes of wine. The original couple that opened the restaurant still work there with their son and his wife.
Directions:
Our travels were easy since we took a train to La Spezia and caught a taxi. My taxi was 35 euros - another friend's was 30 Euros.

Overall:
Our stay at I Poeti 2 was wonderful! We all hope to return someday.
Enjoyed Most:
The view from the balcony was beyond description. We were able to relax and watch the ever-changing scenery. The apartment was roomy, light, and airy.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The steep climb and the stairs were probably the least favorite thing, but once we arrived at the apartment, it was well worth it! The bathroom offered some challenges, but everything was workable.
Surrounding Area:
Besides the beauty of the water, we enjoyed the picturesque town of Portovenere. We were able to visit the Cinque Terre by boat and by bus-train.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The center of Portovenere was easily within walking distance. We explored the little shops. On Monday morning, we were able to buy fresh pasta and gnocchi at a stand there.
Tips or Restaurants:
The apartment was well furnished and stocked with supplies. We appreciated the hair dryer. My brother cooked some dinners, and we were happy to have plenty of dishes and cookware. We tried quite a few of the local restaurants-- all good-- and visited one restaurant across the bay in the boat provided.
Directions:
We were picked up at the train station in La Spezia, so that worked out wonderfully.

Overall:
Overall, it was a great time.
Enjoyed Most:
The location of this property is excellent for someone without a car. The views were fabulous.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The property is located on the top of a steep incline and it is on the 4th floor - 65 steps in all - we counted them. They also have one mirror in the whole apartment and it is in the bathroom. For someone like me the beds where not top of the line, as I have back issues. If you like big towels I suggest you bring your own.
Surrounding Area:
The surrounding area is very beautiful and very interesting particularly if you go to all the places that are available from this town and do the hikes on the Cinque Terre.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The nearest large town was La Spezia and it is a bus ride away.
Tips or Restaurants:
Definitely bring big bath towels and a small mirror. Most of the restaurants where great. The gelato was good, too. We had fun going to the market and making some lunches and dinners at home. I would not recommend this apartment if you are not fit or have any trouble climbing. You really should bring a phone and don't expect TV, as it is all in Italian and no CNN.
Directions:
If the owner is not picking you up, you need to take a taxi with your luggage, as the bus is a few blocks away.
