This apartment is located less than 1 km away from the small village of Matraia, and just 14 km from Lucca. The city of Lucca is worth enjoying simply for its medieval charm, but there are also a number of interesting sights to visit, as well as a great antique market held on the third Sunday of each month. The Duomo di San Martino and the Church of San Michele in Foro are both gorgeous examples of period architecture, while the Casa di Puccini, where the composer was born, has been transformed into a small museum in his honor. You can also climb the 130 foot Torre Guinigi, but on the other hand viewing the tree-topped tower from below might be just as enjoyable… and a lot less work!

This three-house hamlet sits on top of the green hills of Matraia, once used by the farmers of the area, then as housing for nuns, and finally as a kindergarten for local children. The property has a panoramic view overlooking the valley as far as Lucca. L'Asilo 1 is an apartment in the older building, dating back to the 14th century. The structure was built out of stone found in the area, with thick walls to keep it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. A large pergola in front of this building welcomes guests and provides space for outdoor dining with a fantastic view of the valley. L'Asilo 2 was once a stable for hay storage. It is built of stone with a wood-beam roof and has its own pergola for dining al fresco in the terraced back garden. The third building in the hamlet is inhabited by the owners, who are on hand to prepare traditional Tuscan meals or a pizza party in the wood oven. Each of the apartments has its own outdoor area with a barbecue and outdoor dining area. They share a salt-water swimming pool (13m x 5.5m) with spectacular views over the valley.
