Recently restored apartment (180 m2) in an ancient Franciscan convent dating back to the early 13th century in the Tuscan countryside between Arezzo and Lake Trasimeno. The convent is part of the Historical Italian Residences Association. Founded by a Lombardian family, the building was originally called Convento di Giuncheto. In 1300 Saint Agnese, returning from Florence, gave life to the Poor Clare order who then lived in the convent. Then passed to the Dragomanni family, the building was restored in 1600. The recent restoration was conducted with particular attention, both to the use of the materials and to the recovery of the rooms. Peaceful position. Small cared for garden, shaded and equipped, that is shared with the owners who live on the floor above. Swimming pool (4x8) with stairs that lead into the water with jacuzzi spray nozzles (towels for pool supplied), occasionally shared with the owners.Parking. Internet access.

Enjoyed Most:
The location near lovely Castiglione Fiorentino, nice pool area.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Somewhat musty smell and feel because of the old stone walls. However, this kept the house nice and cool in the heat. They need an electronic gate and a better clothes drying area.
Surrounding Area:
Perfect for touring Tuscany and Umbria
Nearby Events or Locales:
Castiglione Fiorentino was within walking distance
Tips or Restaurants:
Enoteca in town--LA BOTTEGA DEL VINO on the main Corso Italia was a find. Also, the Ceramic Aritisan CAPPITINI MATTEO on Via Piave was worth seeking out for fine quality ceramics. The nearest COOP is fine for staples. Local grocers and shops in town, weekly market on Fridays also worthwhile. Kitchen was pretty well equiped. A plus is plenty of glassware.
Check In Out:
The Proprietors were very nice.

Overall:
We had a thoroughly nice visit. The owners are very gracious. We did not have much trouble communicating as they speak passable English. They also speak French. No telephone was available, so we used a phone card on a payphone near the square and the gelato store when we needed to call home.
Enjoyed Most:
We enjoyed the history and appearance of the former convent, the beautiful flowers, the peacefulness of the countryside, and the location near many towns which were enjoyable to visit in day trips. The home was well furnished with lovely antiques and had a wonderful assortment of cookware and dishes which we were happy to utilize when we cooked our own breakfasts and dinners.
Unpleasant Surprises:
We hadn't considered that the thick walls of the building would insulate it so well and it was quite cool inside, especially at night. The owners did furnish a good supply of blankets.
Surrounding Area:
Everything! We did lots of visiting to the small nearby towns. Cortona is great and has a wonderful small museum that we recommend. Pienza is one of our favorite little towns with great buildings, marvelous view and was not overrun with other tourists. Lots of breathtaking scenery. Abbey ruins of San Galgano was interesting.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Castiglion Fiorentino is only a 10-15 minute walk. Small walled town that is fun to explore and has the best gelato in Italy sold just off Girabaldi square.
Tips or Restaurants:
We took our own picnic-size salt and pepper, but the kitchen was stocked with basics such as oil, detergent, etc. Everything else is easy to purchase at the COOP grocery stores. There is one in Cortona on SS71 as well as in Castiglion Fiorentino on the road to Monte S. Savino. Both are open til 8pm. We suggest getting some euros before you leave home to cover the security deposit and other expenses for two days until the banks open on Monday. The COOP grocery store did accept MC and Visa.

Overall The villa was better than we expected. Elegant, beautiful and our hosts were fabulous. We could not have asked for a better experience. Surrounding Area: We were close enough to town to walk but still in the country.
