In the countryside between Florence and Siena, this Tuscany apartment sits in the heart of the Chianti Classico area-- a prime region for wine tasting. The nearest town is Castellina in Chianti, a medieval village that was once on the front lines of the wars between Florence and Siena. Today, the old fort, in the central square, is home to the municipal offices, and the covered gallery once part of the city fortifications has become the magnificent Via delle Volte. Other sights in town include the Castello (which exhibits Etruscan artifacts), the 16th century church of San Salvatore, and its 14th century fresco of the Madonna by Bicci di Lorenzo. Of course you'll also want to organize a few day trips to some of the other great cities in the area, including beautiful Siena, Arezzo, and San Gimignano. Or, for a more impromptu visit, explore some of the authentic little hill towns on your own.

Enjoyed Most:
I was there in October so we kind of had the place to ourselves. It was very peaceful.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Everything was perfect, no regrets. For the price I think the property is excellent quality. The only thing maybe was the herd of famished cats that jumped on our lap and table when we tried to picnic outside.
Surrounding Area:
Possibility of long walks through the vineyards.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Castellina in Chianti is one of the most charming medieval town in the region with the superb "Via della Volte", a fortified street overlooking the countryside.
Tips or Restaurants:
The restaurant-terrace once you exit Via della Volte toward the parking, is excellent. Try the ribollita, a Tuscan bean soup eaten as a meal.

Enjoyed Most:
The views were absolutely stunning. Gorgeous Tuscan countryside, perfectly maintained grounds. Peace and quiet. Roberta is very nice, responsive and helpful.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The apartment decor was a bit drab.
Surrounding Area:
So many things to see in just an hour's drive! Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Arezzo, all were delightful and easily accessible. The local town of Castellina is adorable and fun for winding down after a day in the city.
Tips or Restaurants:
Stop at a supermarket and get everything you need prior to your arrival. Coffee filters, paper towels, salt and pepper, small trash bags should be included on your list as none of these are on hand in the unit.

Overall:
We had a great time, and if we ever get to visit the Tuscany Region in the future, we would without hesitation stay at the same unit. Don't let the comments about the 3 kilometer dirt driveway scare you. You DON'T need a 4-wheel drive to go up and down it like we read in the comments before we went. We had a small Fiat that looked like the car in the movie Just Married, and we had no trouble.
Enjoyed Most:
The views are incredible. Good central location to a lot of different sites. Very clean rooms. Very nice patios to sit, eat, read, or just relax in the evenings. Nice pool. The olive oil they make on the premises is the best I have ever had.
Unpleasant Surprises:
No AC. This was not a problem when we were there because the nights were cool with a nice breeze, but if it were any warmer no AC could have been a problem. The TV only had 2 English stations. The biggest problem was the window screens were held in place by thumb tacks - about 5 tacks per window, which was not nearly sufficient to keep the bugs out.
Surrounding Area:
Scenery was beautiful. Several small towns offering incredible views, shopping, food, open markets, etc.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Castellina in Chianti. Not within walking distance about 6 kilometers.
Tips or Restaurants:
If you are accustomed to the wash cloths in the USA, bring you own because the smallest linen you will get in all of Italy is the size of our kitchen towels. Electrical adapter, cooking spices.
Directions:
If you don't know any Italian, driving can be very tricky. We found navigating Italy a little difficult. Do yourself a favor and get an Italian language book from the library. Get the additional insurance on your rental car. Italians drive like they're fleeing a fire. Their parking is even more interesting and if your rental makes it a week with out a scratch, you are in the minority. One last suggesting, bring a couple of CDs with you.
