About the Experience
Enjoy seclusion and great views from one of our Tuscany villas. This Tuscany villa rental is a picturesque and relaxing place to come home to after exploring one of the nearby Tuscan cities, including Florence, Siena, Arezzo, and San Gimignano. You'll get the best of both the city and the country while enjoying one of the Tuscany holidays, located on a working farm that produces olive oil and wine.
Location
In the countryside between Florence and Siena, this Tuscany apartment sits in the heart of the Chianti Classico area-- a prime region for wine tasting. The nearest town is Castellina in Chianti, a medieval village that was once on the front lines of the wars between Florence and Siena. Today, the old fort, in the central square, is home to the municipal offices, and the covered gallery once part of the city fortifications has become the magnificent Via delle Volte. Other sights in town include the Castello (which exhibits Etruscan artifacts), the 16th century church of San Salvatore, and its 14th century fresco of the Madonna by Bicci di Lorenzo. Of course you'll also want to organize a few day trips to some of the other great cities in the area, including beautiful Siena, Arezzo, and San Gimignano. Or, for a more impromptu visit, explore some of the authentic little hill towns on your own.

    Overall:
We enjoyed our time at Collina 6, despite our comments below.
    Enjoyed Most:
    The view and the vineyard
    Unpleasant Surprises:
No reception. Nobody to introduce us to the apartment. Had to go to the nearby hamlet to get the key. We were very tired having arrived after 30 hours of travelling. It was very dusty. Dogs barking. The beds were uncomfortable. No wine glasses!!! Not enough lounge seating.
    Surrounding Area:
    The nearby villages and vineyards.
    Tips or Restaurants:
    Al Gallopapa in Castellina

    Overall:
We had planned a trip for eight people ranging in age from 7 to 74. This property provided a nearly perfect experience for us, with a roomy house high on a hill in the beautiful Tuscan countryside. We hated to leave.
    Enjoyed Most:
We liked many things about the property. It was like a picture-perfect postcard of wild Tuscany. As a family party, we found this house worked very well for a granddad, two couples, and three kids. The kitchen was excellent for family meals, with a big, long table that could seat 10. We also liked the country setting -- no highways were in view, only castles, hamlets, and villas with their vineyards and olive groves interspersed with woods. And the pool is lovely for cooling off at the end of the day.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
First, let me say we liked the property very well. However, kennels on the property meant that sometimes the night's quiet was disturbed by barking dogs. Sharper knives in the kitchen would also be helpful. Free clothes washers are provided, but expect almost 2 hours for one load to wash. Clothes line is provided for drying.
    Surrounding Area:
This place is very convenient to many hilltowns, especially charming Castellina in Chianti, beautiful Siena, and Monteriggioni, a small walled town that seems frozen in 1600. Local greengrocers and butchers are excellent while supermarkets are an easy drive. Many agriturismo estates that sell wine, olive oil, and other products are nearby. Great gelato is available in Castellina as well. Day trips can be easily done to Assisi, Florence, Pisa, Volterra, and the wine country of Montalcino.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Castellina in Chianti is the nearest small town, about 15 minutes by car. If one likes a long, uphill walk, it can be done but is not recommended. Other walks past villas and hamlets are available, however.
    Tips or Restaurants:
If you like to cook, please be sure to take advantage of the kitchen -- we had great fun recreating some of the meals we had at osterias. Plan on providing all your own seasonings and condiments -- but good Chianti Classico and olive oil can be bought on site. In Castellina, Il Torre had excellent moderately priced food, while Al Gallopapa provides a well-regarded upscale experience. Some think the best gelato in the Chianti is at Antica Delizie. Also check out the Osteria il Mulino di Quercegrosso at nearby Quercegrosso, formerly the Osteria Fonterutoli.

    Enjoyed Most:
The view is absolutely stunning. Sitting on the patio watching the sun set, while the distant cities come to life is a joyous experience I will never forget. A car is a must in that area of Italy. The roads are a thrill to drive with any kind of a sporty car, but that does NOT make for a fun drive for passengers. We had to deal with motion sickness where ever we went. However, that would not prevent us from returning to the area or this villa. We all really loved it very much!
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The beds would be the only thing. That center sag is barely tolerable.
    Surrounding Area:
Charm, history and more views. The location was within easy reach of several historic cities Firenze, Siena, San Gimignano, etc. Castellina in Chianti was a lovely, hospitable place. In fact I found everyone in Italy to be very kind and helpful. The people really had a lot to do with out enjoyment of our vacation.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Castellina in Chianti was about 4 KM--not walkable. Our secluded villa was over 3 KM from the main road. Therefore a walk into town would have been about almost 8 KM--definitely not walkable.
    Tips or Restaurants:
There are nice tennis courts on the property, but you need your own racquet and balls. Finding a bad restaurant is difficult---although in Firenze I would stay away from the Americanized establishments.
    Check In Out:
Finding the office took a few minutes, but the place wasn't that big, so it became part of the adventure. The manager was very pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English. Always a plus.
