Enjoyed Most:
The setting was great. In the countryside, basically in the middle of a grove of olive trees and grape vines. The pool was very nice and refreshing. And the owner was very, very nice.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The beds were not good. They are old, lumpy, bouncy beds. New beds would be a major improvement to the property. The furniture in the living room was also poor, which was too bad, as it was a nice room. Also, the laundry situation is poor. There is no dryer. That's not unusual for Europeans, but Americans should know that before they go. The washer was slow, and we had difficulty getting it to work. Then we had rain, so couldn't leave the clothes out, so one load can take a long time.
Surrounding Area:
The nearby villages were nice. We had dinners in San Casciano and Chiesanouva, and both were nice. The countryside is really beautiful. We took day trips to Florence, San Gimignano, Greve and Sienna. All were easy to reach and return in a day trip.
Tips or Restaurants:
I don't know the names of restaurants that we enjoyed - but be adventurous and you'll be fine. The people are very nice and can usually speak enough English to guide you through the menu.
Directions:
It was a little tricky because the street numbering was not consistent - but you'll find it.

Enjoyed Most:
The location was beautiful and the villa itself was very comfortable. The swimming pool was great, especially since it was very hot when we were there.
Unpleasant Surprises:
There were absolutely no staples such as salt and pepper, sugar, dish soap, etc. in the villa. It would have been a very nice touch if the property owner could have provided those.
Surrounding Area:
The drive to Florence was easy though parking was somewhat of a challenge. Easy access to the Autostrada. Not too far from other cities such as Siena and San Gimignano.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The center of Romola was just down the road. Two small stores with a good selection of wines, cheeses, meats, etc.
Tips or Restaurants:
We had a good dinner at Trattoria Giotto in Chiesanuova. Stores are closed on Sundays, but we arrived early enough to go to the COOP supermarcato which was about 8 km away. Great variety and very reasonable prices. Ask Maria to show you her garden and grotto.

Overall:
We had a great week. We were extremely fortunate in the timing---perfect, mild weather every day, with cool evenings. And yet we avoided the high season, so no crowds to contend with except in Florence. Note that if you want to spend a lot of time in Florence, you'd probably do better to stay in a hotel in the city, rather than rely on the bus, because the bus takes a bit of time and the latest return to La Romola leaves the city at 8:10PM.
Enjoyed Most:
The location, out in the country, but in a village and close to Florence was excellent. It was a great jumping off place for exploring the area. It was an easy drive from Pisa airport and would have been even closer to Florence. Signora Pasaglia is a delight. She's eager to chat or assist as needed but is in no way obtrusive. She gave us a tour of the gardens and invited us to observe the grape harvest. We were so lucky to be there at exactly the right time. The kitchen was a comfortable room for hanging out around the table. It is very well equipped.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The rooms, though very spacious, seemed a little dark. The long unpaved driveway from the gate to the house needs some work, mainly at the top---it's extremely bumpy.
Surrounding Area:
We liked being able to get on a commuter bus to Florence right in the village---easy and inexpensive. Just- buy tickets at the grocery store in La Romola. It was great to enjoy a quiet country location, yet be able to get on the highways easily to head off for exploring. We enjoyed small towns--Volterra is a gem. The countryside all around is lovely and varies a good bit as one goes off in different directions.
Nearby Events or Locales:
The house is in La Romola--a very tiny, not particularly charming village---but one gets a glimpse of local life. It's literally a 5-minute walk from the house to the main road up the driveway. Cerbaia is 2 km, and San Casciano, a little bigger and where you get on the 4-lane highways is about 8 km away.
Check In Out:
Very easy. Be sure to have Euros ready up front for the security deposit.
