About the Experience
You've just found that true Tuscany vacation rental you've been looking for-- the one that puts you out in the middle of rolling vineyards and olive groves like you've only imagined, kilometers from "civilization." Stay in this Tuscany villa apartment where you'll enjoy lazing about your own private outdoor area or hopping in the pool for a mid-afternoon cool-down. Cook your own meals at this accommodation in Tuscany or drive into Poggibonsi to eat out. And although you'll feel isolated from the rest of the world, a short drive will take you into magical Tuscan hill towns like Castellina in Chianti and San Gimignano... not to mention Florence!
Location
This villa accommodation is located in the Chianti countryside, accessed via a steep dirt road that protects and isolates it from the rest of the world-- be prepared for some bumps! Your reward is sweet, though: you will arrive to find yourself surrounded by gorgeous Tuscan countryside, with olive groves and vineyards as far as the eye can see. The nearest town is Poggibonsi, which because of the road is about a 15 minute drive away. Due to its position at the point where the Staggia and Elsa rivers meet, this town has been repeatedly attacked, demolished, and rebuilt over the centuries. Today it's more modern than the typical "Tuscan hill town," but it is great for groceries and restaurants. Sights include the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Town Hall, the characteristic main road, and the 14th century convent of San Lucchese. On April 28 the town holds a festival in the honor of this saint -- and his body is brought out to lead the procession! But if you're looking for the classic hill town experience, try driving into nearby Castellina in Chianti, known for its great Chianti wines. Castellina is a medieval village that was once on the front lines of the wars between Florence and Siena. Today, the old fort, in the central square, is home to the municipal offices, and the covered gallery once part of the city fortifications has become the magnificent Via delle Volte. Other sights in town include the Castello (which exhibits Etruscan artifacts), the 16th century church of San Salvatore, and its 14th century fresco of the Madonna by Bicci di Lorenzo. Of course you'll also want to organize a few day trips to some of the other great cities in the area, including Florence, Siena, Arezzo, and San Gimignano. Or, for a more impromptu visit, explore some of the authentic little hill towns on your own.

    Enjoyed Most:
The beautiful view of being on the top of the hills and surrounded by olive trees and grape vines.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The shower in our bathroom would not drain and therefore we had to stand in dirty soapy water everytime we took a shower.
    Surrounding Area:
The towns, the scenery and the friendly people.
    Tips or Restaurants:
We found no bad resturants. They were all excellent

    Enjoyed Most:
The swimming pool, the view and the garden were all fantastic. We spent most of our time outside dining under the shade of one of the trees, jumping in the pool every now and then to keep cool. The building and setting are just stunning - very tranquil. Although there were other people staying in the other units of the villa, it still seemed quite private. There are a few mosquitoes around after dark, but not as bad as Australian mossies and certainly nowhere near as bad as Scottish midgies. Nevertheless, some fly screens wouldn't go amiss. We were lucky that the other guests were all quite quiet and well behaved when we were there. I reckon it would have been different if we'd had a noisy crowd upstairs - the sound proofing is not great. Everyone goes on about how bad the road to the property is - obviously they've never driven on an Australian or Kiwi dirt road. It was no drama at all.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
    1. I had not expected to have to dispose of our own rubbish! 2. Having the cleaners turn up at 8:00am on the day of check-out. 3 The pool really needs to be cleaned more than once a week. 4 The showers curtains were a real a pain also, making it difficult to a have a relaxing shower and to avoid getting water all over the bathroom floor. 5 Having to share the laundry when you have a one-year-old is a bit of a nuisance.
    Surrounding Area:
Beautiful scenery, particularly around Radda in Chianti. Exploring and finding some excellent restaurants for long lunches. The evenings were surprisingly long even for July and very balmy.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
There did not appear to be any small towns within walking distance. The nearest town is Poggibonsi, which is a pretty drab town by Tuscan standards. The COOP in Poggibonsi is very well equipped, but hard to find.
    Tips or Restaurants:
Beware of the door slamming shut with the wind. The only way to get in is by turning the key. If it slams shut from the wind with the key is inside, it means a drive to the owner's house as there are no spare keys on the premises. For God's sake, tell the owners to buy a bloody handle for the door!!! We found two excellent restaurants, but we're not telling...
    Directions:
    Pretty straightforward.

    Enjoyed Most:
The property was secluded and quiet with great views and having the pool with the kids was nice. Many small towns nearby to explore and Florence was an easy drive. But mostly a good place for relaxing.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
Screens on the windows would have been great for the occasional mosquito - the rooms were very pleasant with the windows open. The road to the villa was winding and steep in spots.
    Surrounding Area:
San Gimignano was great to visit. Being situated within the vineyards gave a real feel of Tuscany - and we greatly enjoyed watching the local lizards.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
Poggibonsi had a nice market - a few miles away.
