Exterior Description
(10,000 m2) This recently restored luxury villa has a long and colorful history. Although there are no known records, the original structure is thought to date back to the Middle Ages. In the 18th century, the villa was transformed into a country residence by the present owners' family. During WWII, both the German troops and the Allied troops used it for barracks; writings in German and English, as well as some soldiers' signatures, can still be seen on certain walls. The walled grounds, which include century-old trees and an original grotto, are accessible via a large iron gate. A part of the garden, which is exclusive to the owner, is separated by a fence. The owner and the caretaker use a separate entrance. The premises shown in the photos, including the terrace, pool, and garden, are exclusive to the clients.

Enjoyed Most:
The view was incredible and peace was magnificent. We especially liked meeting the owner and most of his family. He gave us a guided tour of the villa areas not open to the guests, including the old wine cellars and production facilities. The villa is huge and roomy and our group of 11 plus a baby were well accommodated.
Unpleasant Surprises:
In July it is warm, to say the least, and it would have been more enjoyable with fans in each bedroom and window screens to keep the insects at bay.
Surrounding Area:
The charm of the local people and small village atmosphere. We happened upon a village celebration on the first Sunday when we arrived. There was entertainment and the shops were open serving wine and food. There is so much to see in Tuscany and we enjoyed the remote areas as well as spending time in Florence, Siena and visiting Castello Banfi vineyards.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Vicchio is the village at the bottom of the hill top on which the villa resides. Walking was too far in the heat and rather dangerous on the winding one-lane roads.
Tips or Restaurants:
The owner has a list of excellant restaurants, and we used a couple he suggested to cook for us on three different occasions. They were lovely and skilled, which allowed us to enjoy the villa all the more and not have to eat out every night.
Check In Out:
A real must is to meet with the owner.

Enjoyed Most:
Beautiful setting, lovely home.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Pigeons roosting in eaves were very noisy in early morning hours.
Surrounding Area:
Beautiful countryside. Wine and cheese making in immediate vicinity.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Vicchio. Yes, within walking distance.

Overall:
I must say that the owner was a truly wonderful man. We got lost on the way there (we arrived after it was already dark) and he was still there waiting for us. He was extremely gracious. That night, we proceeded to go to a restaurant he recommended to us, got lost and got a flat on the way. The next morning, he stopped in to get the deposit and saw the flat tire and proceeded to help us change it. We took him to lunch for his troubles. Later that day, one of the other women and I took the car out and got it stuck in a ditch. We got a ride back from an Italian couple. He was packing up his car to go back to Rome and was dropping off a bottle of wine for us as a thank you for lunch and the Italian couple explained to him what had happened; he then towed us out of the ditch. Nonetheless, he still left the villa in our hands after our crazy first day. We even made plans to meet him when we were in Rome the following weekend!
Enjoyed Most:
The villa was beautiful and the grounds were magnificent. It was very peaceful and quiet. After reading the guest book, it seems that everyone renting this particular property had a similar wonderful experience.
Unpleasant Surprises:
One thing I cannot emphasize enough that anyone visiting it in the future must get there before dark as it is pitch black on the roads there at night and the villa is very difficult to find.
Nearby Events or Locales:
It's an easy 45 minute drive into Florence. Bologna was about an hour or so away, with about a 2 hour drive to Siena and San Gimigiano. We had a wine group, Le Baccanti, come to pick us up one morning at the villa and drive us to Montalcino where we visited some wine estates.
Tips or Restaurants:
. We are all foodies and visited an absolutely fabulous restaurant in Vicchio called Casa di Caccia. I would even note it on the website - I found it through a travel book of essays I had on Tuscany.
