About the Experience
In Monte Estoril and a short walk from Cascais, this holiday villa in Portugal has easy access to Lisbon and Sintra. Relax in the beautiful garden at this Portugal villa, beside a swimming pool that resembles your own private lagoon, or barbeque outdoor meals in the evening. You can also enjoy the picturesque town of Cascais, near this villa in Portugal—explore beaches and palaces during the day, and take in the nightlife in the evening!
Location
Located in Monte Estoril between Cascais and Estoril, this property is just a 10-minute walk from the beaches. Lisbon is a 40 minute drive away, and Sintra is closer. In Cascais you will find many different activities—including, of course, the beach! But beyond that, you can visit the Palácio de Conde de Castro Guimaraes, an outstanding palace that is host to a collection including over 25,000 books, many of them very rare. In the center of town you can also explore a series of Neolithic caves, undiscovered until the late 19th century. The "Boca do Inferno" (Mouth of Hell) is an area along the coast where the sea hammers into the rock in such a way as to create a large "boom" on rougher days. You can also catch bullfights in the Praca de Touros or listen to an open-air concernt in the Parque Palmela.

    Overall:
First and foremost we had a wonderful time...the owner of the Villa was the contact. She was lovely and very gracious and actually was who prepared the meal for us the night of my husband's birthday. The food was sensational--she had a man in a white coat serve the appetizers, cocktails and the dinner and it was exactly what I had hoped for.
    Enjoyed Most:
The grounds of the house are beautifully manicured and the house layout is great for a large group.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
I think that the house itself needs a bit of work--nothing major, however a refrigerator door hinge was cracked before our arrival, and the oven didn't really fit the "hole" that it was in. Because of the beach location it can be very damp and there were certain areas in the house that are have a musty odor.
    Surrounding Area:
The house is actually in Monte Estoril which borders Cascais, however, they are two different train stops--Monte Estoril is the easier stop, as while they can both be walked, the Monte Estoril stop is at the bottom of the hill. The directions you provided were perfect and we had no problem finding the property.

    Overall:
The owner is a lovely person, who gave us a fine orientation to everything in the house, and through the gardener and maid and her frequent drop-ins, responded quickly to our questions and needs. She even made us a special local dessert the last night. Be sure to bring the best maps you can get--the streets in Monte Estoril and the neighboring areas are very confusing--the tourist information center was very helpful. Parking on the street was easy and plentiful...we had 3 cars and never a problem. The area feels very safe, but there are locked gates both front and back. The house is used off-season for weddings and receptions, so the big open room with the dining table is called the ballroom, and is decorated as such.
    Enjoyed Most:
There are marvelous outdoor areas for every mood--a sunny poolside with "Tiki "bar area, lovely fruit trees, orange blossoms, and ripe lemons! A Shady deck with grill, cozy area of curved tiled benches, flowers, an upper yard and upper deck area reached from the second floor living room entrance. We also liked being able to have our full party of 12 around the big round dining table.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
Bedrooms are understated, seeming to need a bit more furniture and decor, but had plenty of storage space and most beds were fine. The bathrooms were very nice.....the master suite quite grand in design and amenities. We Americans are used to more upholstered furniture in living rooms--chairs for reading, with good light available....this may be a cultural difference.
    Surrounding Area:
The area suited our needs perfectly! We like nearby "local" restaurants, and there are several very acceptable ones within a 5-minute walk, and a wonderful outdoor cafe for morning coffee or lunches. Also a small supermarket only a block away that served all our needs. And we could easily walk to the beaches and to the train into Lisboa. Our immediate coastal area is lovely, and with Sintra and Lisboa so nearby, the week was quickly filled up with outings, good food, relaxed times by the pool, etc.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
We were right IN town, which was great for our teen members who could get out on their own, and for those who like semi-urban conveniences...eg--coffee and newspapers within an easy walk each morning.
    Tips or Restaurants:
Some of our happiest times were crowding around the kitchen counter snacking on Alentejo cheese, sausages, olives, crusty bread and local wine. Then those who still wanted dinner went out the gate and a half block up the hill to Adegas do Monte??? for black pork or seafood bread soup. For a special outing we ate seaside at the restaurant just past Cascais, at Boca de Inferno.....outstanding.
    Check In Out:
The owner was very gracious to allow us to arrive at noon, since we came in on an overnight plane, and gave us an excellent orientation about all the appliances, locks, etc. Is this usual?

    Overall:
The owner of the property, Helena, spoke perfect English and was most helpful in giving us advice, and quickly solving any problems that we had with the Villa.
    Enjoyed Most:
The outdoor space was beautiful and we spent most of our time outside.
    Unpleasant Surprises:
The setting was too urban and noisy.
    Surrounding Area:
We loved the easy access to Lisbon and Sintra, the good golf courses, the wonderful restaurants, and how gracious and helpful everyone we encountered was.
    Nearby Events or Locales:
We were in Monte Estoril, and Cascais was an easy walk.
    Tips or Restaurants:
We enjoyed all of the restaurants in our neighborhood that we tried. They are small family owned restaurants and we very friendly and had great food.
