Beautiful castle dating back to the year 1000 and restored in 1600 by a noble family, with a magnificent tower built in the same architectural style as that of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The castle has recently been transformed into a cozy tourist residence run by the present owner. The castle is located in the municipal jurisdiction of Montespertoli in a vast farm estate with vineyards and olive groves. Peaceful and panoramic position. A beautiful terraced garden which is very well kept and equipped surrounds the castle and is where you will find the swimming pool (7x14) (1/4-30/10). The terracings are adorned with original Italian gardens from the 18th century. The castle is 1 km from the hamlet of Montagnana (food shop), 20 km from Florence, 65 km from Pisa (airport). There is daily bus service to Florence. Services of the castle and extras: porter's lodge is open from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. on week-days and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. English speaking staff. Public phone (need phone card) in the courtyard. Parking in front of the castle. It is possible to purchase typical products from the farm in the characteristic bar that is located inside the castle's ancient cellars. The structure has a good restaurant open everyday (excluding Tuesday) for dinners and breakfast. On request to paid for on the spot: baby-bed hire (52 Euro/week) and an additional bed (77 Euro/week), domestic help (12 Euro/hour).

Unpleasant Surprises:
Number of units on the property. There are a lot of units on the property for the community space and the size of the pool. It was great for meeting people, but didnt have the best feel as far as privacy.

Nearby towns, location to Florence, Pisa etc.

Enjoyed Most:
The views were fantastic! The restaurant was also very good, but very expensive about 25 Euros each. We enjoyed going around the castle grounds, to the beautiful gardens and even picked some fresh limes to make limeade. I would definitely return to the property again despite a couple of issues I had.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Our apartment is a split level, which we didn't know when we rented it. One of travelers is somewhat disabled and we were also travelling with a two-year-old, which made for complicated sleeping arrangements. Also, our bedroom shared the kitchen wall with the apartment next to us, whose guests got in every night at midnight and woke up at six a.m. That wasn't great. Be sure that if you feel your radiators are on to tell the property management. We didn't know the apartment was being heated, we didn't ask for it, but they got us confused with another apartment who did. We ended up having to pay for a week of heating we didn't want or ask for.
Surrounding Area:
The location is great for day trips to small towns like San Gimignano and Siena. Rent a car -- we did and it was perfect. In good weather, we just drove through the hillside to take in the views. I'm bummed we missed the Prada outlet which was nearby.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano is right down the hill and has a couple of small food shops and a decent cafe for pastry in the mornings. You can walk down the hill, but it's a trek back up.
Tips or Restaurants:
Rent a car, again -- it's the only way to really see things. It's about a 45 minute drive into Florence, but you can park your car at an excellent underground parking lot near the train station and then walk around. Buy a road map of Italy at a roadside stop. The roads are seldom marked as they are in the U.S. so you won't see something that says I-45, it helps to have a frame of reference for day trips.
Check In Out:
You might want to let people know there is a definite cut off time the staff will leave. Although the staff was anticipating our late arrival, we got very lost on the way to the property and caught the property manager as she was walking to her car.

Overall:
The apartment is actually on the second floor (for American's). On the main floor are 2 bedrooms, 1 king bedroom and 1 twin-bedded room, as well as the kitchen area - all with large windows that open up to an amazing views. Also on the main floor are both bathrooms with showers. Up 2 steps - for those who have children or elderly parents - there is another double bedroom with a small window. Then upstairs is another twin bedded room with a very small window - perfect for children. I believe that out of all the outbuildings, this one has the most amazing views.
Enjoyed Most:
The views are magnificent. The pictures on the website do not do the castle and it's outbuildings justice. Three main windows opened up to the most picturesque views ever. Being in an outbuilding still allows you to roam the public areas of the castle. It seemed every corner you turned you discovered something new and amazing.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The castle has banquet capabilities so it may cater to larger crowds. The downside was there was a very large, extremely noisy wedding party staying there the week we stayed. The noise was not an issue during the day; however at night, the wedding guests made it a habit to retire quite late.
Surrounding Area:
The area is magnificent. There are tiny towns that surround the area, but yet it is only about a 25 minute drive from the center of Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Baccaiano was within about a 15-minute walk down the hill. It is a very small town. Montespertoli is only about a 10 to 15 minute drive from the castle. Its a little larger town that has a small COOP for groceries. It has a small town center where the locals fill the streets late in the evening.
Tips or Restaurants:
Make sure to do your grocery shopping on Saturday before the COOP closes. It is not open on Sundays. Also, only one dish towel is provided, so you may want to bring an extra. You'll need basics such as dish soap, salt and pepper and napkins. There are regular beverage glasses and coffee cups. However, surprisingly since you're in wine country, there were no wine glasses.
