The Lake Como vacation villa itself is peaceful and quiet—it sits on top of a hill, at the end of a winding road. Overall:
Have fun!
Enjoyed Most:
The Pool sold us before we got there and was still one of the highlights of the trip. The views from the area were spectacular. Also, the tranquility and privacy were unbeatable. The loft is a great area for inside entertaining and the outside seating under the pergola was great in the evening. All of this at a reasonable price. The iPod speakers were nice, too, as was the Internet access for an additional charge.
Unpleasant Surprises:
The walk from town back to the villa. It's a 15 minute hike straight up-hill on a very steep angle. While a good workout, a car is suggested for those renting this property.
Surrounding Area:
Vezio - the hillside town where the villa is located is small and charming with two good restaurant choices - prefer the Castello one. Then, down the hill, Varenna is a charming town which is not as touristy as the other two bigger mid-lake towns, but still has a lot to offer with a couple markets and some good eating options. Ferry rides to Bellagio and Menaggio are 15 minutes or so each and they run pretty frequently. If you want to go further up or down lake, recommend the hydrofoil top floor!.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Varenna...15 to 20 minutes up or downhill.
Tips or Restaurants:
Restaurants...in Vezio - Portichello and the Castello restaurant were both good choices. The food at the latter, while not as much variety, was excellent especially if you like meat.
In Varenna - Vechhia Varenna was excellent. Restaurant del Sole was good but service was least friendly of all options. The outdoor eating by the Lido was great for lunch.
Visit the Castello to see the bird-handler and his birds.
Best shopping in Bellagio.
Good hiking in Menaggio.
Golf course in Menaggio is fun to play. An interesting, but short layout. Condition is OK. Golf Course Villa D'Este is in better condition, but not as scenic and harder to get to.
Be sure to buy some olive oil from Stella at the Villa.
Recommend reservations whereever you go. A cell phone that works in Europe is helpful too.
Directions:
We rented a private van from Malpensa to the Villa. Cost about 350USD for the 8 of us. Also, easy to take bus from Malpensa to Milan Central. Train from Milan to Varenna, and taxi to villa. Call Lorenza for taxi service. She speaks good English and is very nice.
