Located on the same estate as the Villa Settignano, with its beautiful, world-famous gardens, this comfortable Italian apartment rental dates back to the seventeenth century. Although it is now a comfortable vacation rental, it was originally built as the chapel to the villa, and it retains the unique architectural characteristics that identify it as such today.

This classic Italian rental rests on a hillside above the historic village of Settignano, considered an ideal place for rest and meditation. It is a place filled with vines and olive groves, with roots all the way back to Roman times. If you take the time to explore its streets, you’ll find the Church of Saint Maria, the New Public Square (which provides a panoramic view of Florence as well as a lovely statue), the Oratory of Vannella, the Villa Michelangelo (where the artist spent his youth), and the Villa Capponcina. There are also paths for scenic walks around the countryside. From the main square in Settignano, you can take bus #10 into Florence.

(Entire estate - 10,000 m2) The estate is set into a hillside with spectacular views of Florence and the surrounding Arno valley. Completed early in the seventeenth century in the traditional Tuscan style, the entire estate is a marvel of architecture and gardening. The chapel itself is located on the bowling green, with windows looking out onto the gardens and views of Settignano and Florence. You’re welcome to explore the gardens all around the villa, and (while not strictly private) the space around your apartment is large enough to ensure privacy. You also have access to a shared swimming pool, open from May to the first of October. Because of their significance, the gardens surrounding the villa are open to the public (by appointment), so your party will not have entirely private access—surely a small price to pay for inhabiting a piece of Italian history.

(180 m2) Ground Floor: Enter on the ground floor through a pair of enormous wooden doors. Inside you’ll find a single open room with arched ceilings above a dining table seating six; to your left is a living area with couches and a television. Above you the ceiling is open to exposed beams on the first floor. A wooden staircase against the far wall leads to a railed walkway connecting the upstairs rooms. The kitchen is located in its own room, fully equipped with microwave, refrigerator, washing machine, oven, stove, iron, and dishwasher. There is also one bedroom with queen-sized bed (160 cm; can be separated into two singles upon request), walk-in closet, and a bathroom with sink, toilet, and shower.
First Floor: The second floor rooms are accessed via an open, mezzanine area, but each bedroom closes off for privacy. There are two bedrooms here, each with queen-sized beds (160 cm) that can be separated into two upon request, walk in closets, and small bathrooms with sink, toilet, and shower.

Available Amenities: Heating, air conditioning, microwave, refrigerator, washing machine, oven, stove, dishwasher, iron. Shared swimming pool (May-October), access to estate gardens, parking. Bed and bath linens changed twice a week.
Extra Services: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner available upon request. All extra services are payable in cash on site.

Overall:
The people at the villa were very nice and helpful. We had a power outage late one night and they came to assist us.
Enjoyed Most:
Location was great and the grounds were wonderful.
Unpleasant Surprises:
Living room did not have enough comfortable seating. One bedroom was not air conditioned. The two upstairs bathrooms were very small.
Surrounding Area:
Views, easy access to Florence.
Nearby Events or Locales:
Settignano - yes, but it was a hike uphill to come back to the villa. We drove to the town.
Tips or Restaurants:
Everything was available at the villa - Toilet paper, washing machine soap, etc. Probably may need to bring some regular soap as the bars are really small. Allow enough time for clothes to hang dry if you use the washing machine - no clothes dryers in Italy.
Make sure you get phone numbers for the property manager, etc. in case there is a problem after hours.
Directions:
This property is tucked away down some very narrow streets and up the hill, but the signage is pretty good.
